[30032] "The Selinsgrove Times-Tribune [Selinsgrove, PA], 23 November 1933," p. 1: "George D. Witmer, 49, died a beautiful death last evening, immediately after leading, with his rich baritone vcice, a group of friends in the singing of 'Smiles'. Members of the local Masonic Lodge, Lafayette No. 194, and their wives, numbering more than 200 persons, assembled in the basement of the First Lutheran Church for dinner and a social evening. After Mr. Witmer had led the singing he took his seat at the banquet table beside his wife and leaning over her shoulder, as if to speak to her, expired. He was immediately carried from the banquet hall to the Sunday school room on the floor above, where physicians pronounced him dead. Mr. Witmer had been suffering with indigestion for several days, but was net considered seriously ill. An acute attack of that ailment is attributed as the cause of his death. George D. Witmer was born at Salem, April 4, 1885, the son of the late George Miller Witmer and his widow, Mrs. Sarah Amelia Moyer Witmer, of Salem. After attending the Salem public schools he was graduated from Susquehanna University School of Business in the class of 1906. He was one of Susquehanna's greatest football players. Mr. Witmer was then associated with his father in conducting a store at Salem and the management of lhe George M. Witmer Sons Mill, at Clifford. Mr. Witmer was possessed with a baritone voice, the cultivation of which he fondly hoped for. In 1911 he saw an advertisement in a Philadelphia newspaper for untrained voices to join the great chorus of the Metropolitan Opera Company, in Philadelphia, where special training would be given. Mr. Witmer seized that opportunity, went to Philadelphia and was one of 16 chosen by Oscar Hammerstein from 900 applicants. After a year's study with the Metropolitan Opera Company he returned to Salem, due to the illness of his father, and had charge of the Witmer business activities. During the World War he was appointed by the United States Government as a flour mill inspector, in which capacity he traveled over much of the United States. He held this position until that line of endeavor was abandoned after the Armistice. Four years ago Mr. Witmer was appointed receiver for the Sunbury and Selinsgrove Electric Railway Company, which position he held at the time of his unexpected death. He was a director in the Snyder County Trust Company since organisation of the institution. Mr. Witmer was also a member of the borough council. Mr. Witmer was married November 21, 1912, to Miss Maude Isabelle Runkle, of Middleburg. Day before yesterday they celebrated their 21st wedding anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Witmer resided at Middleburg after their marriage until 11 years ago, when they removed to Selinsgrove. Brief services will be held at the late residence, 221 Orange street, Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, following which the cortege will move to Salem Reformed Church. There in the edifice where the deceased worshiped since a boy, and where his family for generations before him did likewise, services will be conducted by tJie pastor, Rev. Herman G. Snyder, of Middleburg, and Rev. Earl G. Kline, pastor of St. Paul's Reformed. Church, Selinsgrove. Interment will be in the Union cemetery, Selinsgrove, with the last rites of the Masonic Order. George D. Witmer is survived by his widow, one son, George D. Witmer, Jr., a senior in the Selinsgrove High School; one daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Witmer, a student of the 6th grade in the local schools; his mother, Mrs. George M. Witmer, of Salem, and the following brothers and sisters: Miss Katherine Witmer, of Salem; Mrs. Arthur C. Harris, of Gordon; Ralph Witmer, of West Walnut street; Calvin Witmer, of Snyder street, Mrs. J. H. Kuster, of North Orange street. George Witmer always smiled and always sang. He will be remembered for both, as well as his many other fine attributes."
