[2135] Humphrey de Bohun VIII, Earl of Hereford and Essex, was Constable of England; succeeded to Earldom in 1298; joined opposition to King Edward II and was slain in battle. See article in Encyclopaedia Britannica, 1956 Edition, 3:791. Also see Humphrey X in this database, last of the male line (whose co-heiresses married into the royal house). "The Bushnell Family Genealogy" [http://www.scottbushnell.com] offers: "Humphrey VIII de Bohun, 4th Earl of Hereford was born in 1276 and died on March 16, 1321-1322 in the Battle of Boroughbridge. He was a member of an important Norman family of the Welsh Marches and was considered one of the most remarkable men of his time. His father was Humphrey de Bohun, 3rd Earl of Hereford and his mother was Maud de Fiennes, daughter of Enguerrand II de Fiennes. He was born at Pleshey Castle located in Essex, England. The castle is nothing more than an earthwork ruin now. He succeeded his father as Earl of Hereford and Earl of Essex, and Lord High Constable. Humphrey held the title of 'Bearer of the Swan Badge'. His marriage to Elizabeth of Rhuddlan (Elizabeth Plantagenet), daughter of King Edward I of England and his first Queen consort Eleanor of Castile, on November 14, 1302, at Westminster gained him the lands of Berkshire. She gave him 10 children." Cf. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humphrey_de_Bohun,_4th_Earl_of_Hereford.

[1480] See "Medieval English Ancestors of Certain Americans," Carl Boyer III (Santa Clarita, CA, 2001), p. 129. Llewellyn I, Ap Iorworth: he descends from the ancient Princes of North Wales (earliest known ancestor is Llewellyn, Prince of N. Wales, d. 994) and from Aelfgar (Edgar), Earl of Mercia who was banished in 1058 (d. 1059), and his wife Alfigifu (their dau. Editha m. Griffith I, Llewellyn's son & heir). He recovered his paternal lands in 1194 and in 1201 was the greatest prince in Wales; in 1215 he took Shrewsbury; his rights were secured by special clauses in the Magna Charta. In 1239 he retired to a Cistercian monastery. Ernst-Friedrich Kraentzler, "The Ancestory of Richard Plantagenet and Cecily de Neville..." (Salt Lake City: Accelerated Indexing Systems, 1978), p. 25, gives Llewellyn's birth year as about 1164. He is known as "The Great". Professor Stewart Baldwin discusses Llewellyn's ancestry in "The American Genealogist" for October, 2001. See http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~greenefamily/bowen/pafn74.htm. An article touching on relations between Llywelyn ab Iorwerth and baronial families of the March is J.J. Crump's "Repercussions of the Execution of William de Braose: A Letter from Llywelyn ab Iorwerth to Stephen Segrave, Summer 1230" (Historical Research, vol. 73 no. 181, pp. 197-212, [June 2000]). [8669] "The York Dispatch [York, PA], 4 May 1959," p. 26: "The body of a 66-year-old Harrisburg grocer, who had been missing for nine weeks, was found In the Susquehanna river near the York county shore yesterday. He was identified as Edwin B. Kennedy, who disappeared Feb. 15. Because Lancaster state police have jurisdiction over the river to the York county line. Trooper William J. Devlin was detailed. He said Kennedy's body was found wedged in trees about six feet off shore by Michael Seitz, Lancaster. Seitz was walking along the shore near Welshs landing when he found the body, which was later recovered by state police here. Kennedy was identified by cards in his wallet, and by a son, John W. Kennedy, Harrisburg, according to Devlin. The trooper said there were no indications of foul play. Deputy Coroner Dr. Sidney Levy, of Wrightsville, said the cause of death apparently was drowning, but that he would confer with Dr. Thomas M. Hart, county coroner, about conducting an autopsy on the body to determine the exact cause of death."
