[864] He was killed by the Indians near his house in 1676; his wife and three children were carried away into captivity. The family apparently had previously been captured and had escaped. The wife and mother died in the captivity of 1676, and their grandfather Anthony ransomed the three children. See F. Powesheik Co., IA 30 Aug 1859, daughter of Charles Conrad Lukehart and Penniah Garrett). However, the 10 May 1910 federal census of Lincoln Twp., Madison Co., IA reports Nellie, wife of Edward, as age 26 and states her father was b. in MA and her mother in OH, and lists in the Edward H. Paullin household a George R. Pratt, age 18, "hired man," born in IA of a father b. in WI and a mother b. in IA.
