[38912] Find A Grave Memorial 126 offers: "Poet. Born Anne Dudley to nonconformist parents Thomas Dudley and Dorothy Yorke Dudley in Northampton, England. Her father was the steward for the Earl of Lincoln and afforded his daughter an unusually complete education. About 1620 she married Simon Bradstreet, her father's assistant. On March 29, 1630, Bradstreet and her family sailed for the New World. After several years, they finally settled on a farm in North Andover, Massachusetts in 1644. Simon Bradstreet became a judge, royal councilor, and twice a governor of the colony. Anne Bradstreet became mother to eight children and wrote only privately. She was frequently ill and apparently developed a vaguely morbid mind set and was continually distressed by the culturally ingrained condescension toward women. Her first public work may well have been the epitaph she penned for her mother in 1643. Four years later, her brother-in-law carried a collection of her poems with him to England where he had them published. They appeared as 'The Tenth Muse Lately Sprung Up in America, By a Gentlewoman of Those Parts' in the New World in 1650. While it did sell in England, the volume was not well received in Massachusetts. Although she continued to write for herself and her family, no more of her work was published in her lifetime. She was purportedly buried in the Old Burying Point in Salem, Massachusetts beside her husband, though other locations for her grave have also been proposed. In 1678 her 'Several Poems Compiled with Great Variety of Wit and Learning' was posthumously published followed by 'The Works of Anne Bradstreet in Prose and Verse.' She is now considered the earliest of American poets and among the finest of her age. Simon (III) and Anna had two infants who died young, William who died at age five, and Anna Magdalena Kern who m. Elmer E. Willhide and with him moved to Shelby, OH in 1903. Simon served as a solider in the War Between the States.
"The son of Simon & Magdalena Martha (Gutshall) Kern, in 1860 he was a farmer living with his family in Toboyne Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania. A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service: 1. Drafted in Perry County October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg November 5 as a private with Co. F, 177th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka 'Drafted Militia'), and honorably discharged with his company August 5, 1863. 2. Enlisted in Harrisburg September 2, 1864, mustered into federal service there September 7 as a private with Co. F, 208th Pennsyvlania Infantry; and honorably discharged with his company June 1, 1865. His obituary in the Newport News claims, 'At the first call for soldiers by President Lincoln, Simon Kern willingly responded and went forth to do service for his country,' which is a complete fiction, the nature of which is seen frequently in Civil War obituaries. Clearly, he did not first enter the military until a year and a half after Lincoln's 'first call' and then only because he was drafted. The obituary also erroneously reports his second discharge date as June 15. Oddly, his pension index does not mention the 177th Pennsylvania even though the family clearly knew of his service with that regiment. His marital history is complex and not well documented, so only the raw data is presented here. He apparently married three times: 1) Anna Magdalena Briner, who appears in the 1860 census, 2) Amanda Watts, who appears in the 1870 census, 3) Mary E. Stull, who appears in the 1880 census. The children are Mary Priscilla (b. 07/08/51 - married a Gutshall), David W. (b. @1854), William (12/09/54), Mary Catherine (b. 07/08/61, d. 09/24/63), Norman L. (b. 04/??/64), Charles (b. @1865), Manora Ella (b. 02/??/67), Ulysses W. (b. 05/??/68), and William Arthur (b. @1871). It is not certain which woman bore which children, and the data is unverified." from Dennis Brandt (tbng@comcast.net) in January, 2020.
