When he arrived with his family in Ohio it was a dark forestHe and his boys would have to have first cleared an area by falling trees, that they would use to build them a log cabin, and then cut a ring around the tree's left around the cabin.The first year they would have planted corn around the trees.As the tree's died sunlite could get to the growing corn.After trimming up the trees needed for the Cabin, they would have invited everyone around them to come help raise their cabin, furnishing usually Whiskey and wild game to eat.During the winter, weather permitting, the trees that had be girdled were cut down, and depending on the species, cut for different uses.Some would have been split for fencing, some for firewood, some for furniture, and the rest were burned to get charcoal and pearl ash that could be sold.Levi is listed as a carpenter so he most likely apprenticed at a fairly young age to someone who taught him his trade.The whole family, Benjamin Sr., Benjamin Jr., Jacob, Levi and Christman would have worked together to get their land cleared, crops planted and harvested.As each boy married, they built another cabin on their land.They all were living next to each other until after Benjamin Sr. died.Christman rented a farm next to Daniel Brillhart, his wife's father, after he and Lucinda married. He is listed as a Tenet farmer on the 1860 Census.Levi, Jacob and Benjamin,Jr. where still living on the original homestead and Margaret is living on a small piece of land next to the Brillharts too."

Philippe-Auguste était alors en guerre avec Henri II, roi d'Angleterre. Mathieu, comte de Boulogne, allié de celui-ci, fit prier Jean de Ponthieu de lui accorder l'autorisation de passer sur ses terres pour se rendre en Normandie au secours du roi Henri. Jean de Ponthieu s'y refusa. Mathieu, piqué de ce refus, pénétra de force dans le pays, passa la Somme au gué de Blanquetaque, et se porta sur le Vimeu, où il brûla plus de quarante villages. Bernard et Jean s'unirent pour le poursuivre, mais ils ne purent que constater les ravages qui venaient d'être causés, sans pouvoir rejoindre l'audacieux comte de Boulogne. La fille du comte de Ponthieu, est-il dit dans l'Histoire des Mayeurs d'Abbeville, eut en dot une somme de 2,500 livres, somme énorme pour le temps. Elle lui apporta en outre la terre de Saint-Aubin, près Dieppe, et celle de la Berquerie, en Flandre. Les cérémonies nuptiales se firent à Abbeville, en 1178, en présence de Guillaume de Champagne, archevêque de Reims, ce qui fut confirmé par Thiébaut, évêque d'Amiens. . . . Bernard fit aussi ses fondations : d'accord avec sa femme Annora, il fonda, en 1191, l'abbaye de Lieu-Dieu locus dei, près Gamaches ', et un chapitre de chanoines dans ce bourg même. Comme il avait toujours vécu en bonne intelligence avec l'abbé de Saint-Valery, celui-ci, pour témoignage de la bonne estime qu'il faisait de sa personne, déclara qu'à l'avenir il n'élèverait plus de réclamation auprès du comte de Ponthieu au sujet de la commune du Marquenterre.
