Bernard III, qui avait succédé à son père Bernard II, était alors possesseur de la seigneurie de Saint-Valery. Il servit la cour de Henri II, roi d'Angleterre, duc de Normandie, et fut par lui envoyé extraordinairement vers le pape. La bonne entente ne régna pas toujours entre Bernard et son suzerain, Jean, comte de Ponthieu. Celui-ci, qui possédait la ville du Crotoy située sur la Somme à l'opposite de Saint-Valery, y avait fait bâtir une forteresse pour s'assurer un péage sur chaque navire qui entrerait dans la rivière. Bernard, qui prétendait avoir seul des droits à ce recouvrement, fit augmenter les fortifications de Saint-Valery. Depuis cette époque les deux forteresses semblèrent deux ennemis placés en face l'un de l'autre et se mesurantde l'oeil: il en résulta, ainsi que nous le verrons bientôt, des luttes fâcheuses pour la prospérité du pays. Une autre circonstance vint augmenter ces causes de dissentiment. Le comte de Ponthieu ayant épousé en seconde noces Laure, fille de Bernard, il s'en sépara peu de temps après sous le prétexte qu'elle était parente avec Méhaux, sa première femme, et il épousa Béatrix de Saint-Pol, fille d'Anselme, de Camp-d'Avoine. Bernard, outré de colère, ne ménagea point ses reproches. Des injures on en vint aux voies de fait : c'est à qui des deux seigneurs entrerait sur les terres de son voisin pour y mettre tout à feu et à sang. Tous les deux se jurèrent haine à mort, et la guerre féodale ensanglanta de nouveau les rives de la Somme. Parmi les anciens seigneurs de Saint-Valery l'histoire cite Bernard. Sa fille, appelée Mehaux, fut mariée à un haut seigneur du pays de Gales, appelé Guillaume de Brayame et elle rendit d'importants fervices au roi, Jean d'Angleterre. Elle se vanta un jour au comte d'Aumale, son neveu, d'avoir tant de fromages que si cent des plus vigkereux (vigoureux) hommes d'Engleterre éloient assiégés en un chasteau ils se pourroient défendre avec ces fromages plus d'un mois, pas si encore que toujours trouvassent les fromages appareillés pour jeter hors. Le roi de France, Louis VII, vivement affecté des désordres qu'occasionnait cette mésintelligence entre les deux seigneurs, s'interposa pour y mettre un terme. Après plusieurs tentatives sans succès, il obtint enfin que le différend serait terminé par le duel, dans la cour de l'abbaye de Corbie et en présence de l'abbé Hugues Ier. Bernard, accompagné de ses champions et de ses avoués, partit de SaintValery avec un brillant cortège de chevaux armés de toutes pièces. Il arriva à Corbie où vint aussi son adversaire décidé comme lui à vider la question par le sort des armes; mais, grâce à l'invervention de l'abbé et d'autres hommes prudents, surtout de Thibaut, comte de Chartres, qui s'y trouva de la part du roi, le combat n'eut point lieu, et la rencontre scella la réconciliation depuis longtemps désirée par les populations à qui ces luttes avaient coûté tant de sang. Par le traité qui fut passé séance tenante, la forteresse du Crotoy demeura au comte de Ponthieu, et Bernard conserva ses châteaux de Domart, Berneuil et Saint-Valery. Bernard III, fut père de Bernard IV, qui, d'après les annales connues, lui succéda, et de Laure ou Laurette de Saint-Valery qui, ayant épousé en premières noces, Jean, comte de Ponthieu, en fut répudiée et épousa ensuite le célèbre Aléaume de Fontaines, fondateur de l'église de Longpré qui s'était illustré dans la Terre-Sainte." Darsy, dans son Histoire de Gamaches, signale une lacune qui existe entre Bernard III et Bernard IV, parceque la date des événements qui s'accomplirent du temps de ce dernier, sont trop éloignés de l'époque de la mort de Bernard III, et il suppose que Gauthier, fils et successeur de celui-ci, qui fit aussi le voyage de Terre-Sainte, dut être seigneur de Saint-Valery dans les premières années du XII* siècle."
