Gardner departed this life, December 31st, A.D., 1871. He was born in Fauquier County, VA, April 16, 1795, and emigrated to Nelson County, Ky, in 1803, and became a member of the 'Regular Baptist Church,' A. D. 1816. On the 1st day of January, 1818, he was united in marriage with Miss Hulda Glover. In the fall of 1825 he emigrated from Nelson County, KY to Sullivan County, IN and on the 8th day of January, 1826, he joined the Baptist Church, called 'Little Flock', where he remained a member in full fellowship until his decease, leaving ten children out of twelve, to mourn their loss. As a volunteer in the war of 1812 he stood as one of the sentinels at General Jackson's headquarters during the battle of New Orleans. He filled several important civil offices during his forty-six years residence in Sullivan County, and was relied upon by all who knew him, as a safe counselor in civil matters, as well as church government. His funeral sermon was preached by Elder William Stansil, Jan 1, 1872, after which his mortal remains were laid away in their last resting place, amid a large circle of weeping relatives and friends."
"Ancestors of Roscoe Clinton Myers" at http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/m/y/e/Ron-C-Myers/GENE31-0071.html offers the story of James' mother: "After the death of her husband, Thomas Gardner, Eleanor married John Lloyd and settled in Culpepper Co., VA. In 1812, John moved his family to Kentucky. They traveled "in Ruston's pack-train over Boone's trail on horseback, driving their stock, and bringing their coin, silver tableware, and a violin." They settled near the village of Fairview, Nelson County, KY. John gave the land on which the Little Union Baptist Church was built. He later moved to Sullivan County, Indiana. Eleanor Gardner died in 1833, John in 1858. Both are buried in the Little Flock Baptist Cemetery near Shelburn, Indiana. Their children were: Philip, Williamson, John Emery, Thomas, Moses, Nancy, Letisha, Elizabeth, Asenith, & Eleanor."
