When very young he moved with his parents from Ohio to Bureau County, Illinois, where his father established the family home at Sheffield. He attended the schools there and the United Brethren College at Westfield, Illinois. On the 13th of October, 1872, he was united in marriage to Mary B. Wintz. To them were born two children, Oscar Ellsworth, who died September 30, 1898, and Lenora B. Warnock, who resides with her family in Kansas City, Mo. The mother of these children was taken in death on July 26, 1882. In the spring of 1874 he came with his father to Kansas and purchased the farm southeast of Oskaloosa upon which he lived for so many years. In January, 1875, with his wife and family he moved to Kansas and resided in the Lone Tree neighborhood until March 1911, when he moved into Oskaloosa.William Henry Pottorf, oldest son of Samuel and Mary Pottorf, was born in Ohio, February 2, 1851. On the 17th of April, 1884, he was married to Clarissa B. Briner. To them were born two children, Claire A. McMahon of Ness City, and Sadie V. Wilson of Douglas, Kansas. The mother of these children passed away July 5, 1917. After her death he continued to make his home at this place, devoting his time to the care of fruits and flowers. That he was a lover of the beautiful in flowers and music can be attested by all who knew him. He went from this life about seven oclock in the evening of June 5, 1930.
He has left to mourn his passing the three daughters and their husbands, seven grandchildren, Alice H. Fritts of Dayton, Ohio, Oscar W. Warnock of La Grande, Ore., Dwain M . Warnock of New York City and John C. and Peter William Warnock of Kansas City, Mo., and Patricia Lucile and Thos. E McMahon of Ness City. He had two great grandchildren in whom he was greatly interested, Elizabeth Lucille Fritts of Dayton, Ohio and Loralee Warnock of LaGrande, Ore.
For a number of years, Mr. Pottorf was caretaker of the beautiful Pleasant View cemetery beneath whose whispering pines his body will now rest, and it was the pride of his heart. Its present state of beauty is due in great measure to his devoted care, he having spent most of his waking hours for months and years amid its trees and shrubs and blooming flowers and familiarized himself with every family lot and grave. He passed from this life as he would have passed quietly and peacefully and his body will rest where he would have it rest, amid the lovely surroundings of his cherished Pleasant View.
