[58099] Find A Grave memorial 175931669 offers: "Levi's parentage was/is fairly well established by word of mouth amongst the local Kinney clan in the greater Kent Parish of Carleton Co. area. However the lack of 'real' birth certificates for such a long period of time in that area applies to almost everyone born in that general area, and is not helpful for "irrefutable proof" that many seek. Levi's death certificate from Dec of 1899 in the St. John Insane Asylum unfortunately doesn't list his parentage like many traditional DC's did. It did at least list his age as 83 and his vocation as farmer and his place of origin as Carleton Co. What I can offer are two citations, the first one is only based on association and assumption. In the 1861 census, Levi is found as a boarder listed by line item next to his youngest brother Asa Kinney Jr. Asa's age is correct, but Levi's is 10 years too young, but he was starting to become more troubled by that point. His marriage had failed by then as well as his attempt to live and farm on the Maine side of the border. I have found 2 given ages that match an 1816 assumed birth year, the 1850 US census and his death at the asylum. The 1861 Canadian census that indicates 1826, and the 1871 indicating 1819, and the 1881 indicates year of 1801. Clearly the best matches are the earliest when he was more lucid, and the final probably based on his date given by family when he was committed there. The one and only truly connecting parentage citation is from the murder trial of George Gee who killed his 1st cousin and my Great Aunt Millie Gee, younger sister to my great grandmother Martha Idella Gee DeMerchant. In fact my grandmother Lizzie DeMerchant Kinney was 9 years old when her young aunt was killed and referred to this tragedy on more than one occasion in my youth. In the trial testimony for the defense, George Gee's father Benjamin refers to family members that were insane. He states that his Uncle Levi Kinney was in the Insane asylum, even though Levi had been dead for almost 5 years at that point. Benjamin Gee was a son of Peter Gee and Elizabeth 'Eliza' Kinney. Eliza was a daughter of Asa Kinney and Elizabeth 'Betsey' Tompkins, hence Levi in order to be an uncle to Benjamin could only be Eliza's brother. I hope this helps everyone's search for connections as it is the closest option one can find to link Levi by physical citation. Information provided by Cousin Jerry Kuntz (Anonymous), a Kinney cousin descended from two sons of Israel, John and Asa."
