In 1845/46 an old lady named "Miss Ichabod" was living with Judith Grindle and is presumed to be her mother [ - "The Grindle Family of Hancock County, Maine" (1978), p. 17]. Ancestry.com offers: "Dow Name Meaning - Scottish (also found in Ireland): reduced form of McDow. This surname is borne by a sept of the Buchanans. English: variant of Daw. Americanized spelling of Dutch Douw, an Old Frisian personal name. Americanized spelling of German Dau."

The 1920 federal census lists the family in Madison, Lake Co., OH and Frank is a locomotive engineer - in the household are Harriet (wife, age 44, b. in OH), and children Catherine (11), Roberta (6) and Francis (19 - a motor tester). The 1930 federal census in Madison, OH lists Frank as an engineer "in canning factory".
