[707] John M. Elizabeth (surname Langley?) (who died in York, ME) - or perhaps (1) Sarah Palgrave, as stated in "Ancestors of American Presidents, 2009 Edition," Gary Boyd Roberts (Boston: NEHGS, 2009), p. 549. John was one of the wealthiest men in York County, Maine, with a "large property...on Alcock's Neck." He was a Sergeant in the town militia, a member of the first Board of Selectmen in 1652, and Selectman in many succeeding years. "Pioneers on Maine Rivers," Wilbur D. Spencer (Bowie, MD: Heritage Books, 1990), p. 142 states that John was living in the house of George Burdett as his farm manager and in 1646 moved to the east side of the York River, and died in 1671-5, leaving Elizabeth as his widow. See "The Pioneers of Maine and New Hamphsire, 1623-1660," Charles Henry Pope (Baltimore, MD:Clearfield Co., reprinted 2002), pp. 2-3. See "History of York, Maine," Banks, Charles Edward (Baltimore: Regional Publishing Co., 1967) Vol. I, pp. 114-115, and Vol. II. See "Old Kittery and Her Families," Everett S. Stackpole (Lewiston, ME: 1903), pp. 275-6, which also lists children Damuel ?, Hannah, Mary and Lydia. See "First Settlers of New England, Surnames A-B," p. 12, which reports John graduated from Harvard College in 1646 and r. Roxbury, and "is believed to have been a physician."

[17273] Ancestry.com offers: "Alexander Name Meaning - Scottish, English, German, Dutch; also found in many other cultures: from the personal name Alexander, classical Greek Alexandros, which probably originally meant 'repulser of men (i.e. of the enemy)', from alexein 'to repel' + andros, genitive of aner 'man'. Its popularity in the Middle Ages was due mainly to the Macedonian conqueror, Alexander the Great (356-323 bc) - or rather to the hero of the mythical versions of his exploits that gained currency in the so-called Alexander Romances. The name was also borne by various early Christian saints, including a patriarch of Alexandria (ad c.250-326), whose main achievement was condemning the Arian heresy. The Gaelic form of the personal name is Alasdair, which has given rise to a number of Scottish and Irish patronymic surnames, for example McAllister. Alexander is a common forename in Scotland, often representing an Anglicized form of the Gaelic name."
