[5076] An authority on the Domesday tenants in England, Mr. A. S. Ellis, authored a note in "Notes and Queries" (5th Series, 10:402-03) stating that Fladd (or Fleance) is the eleventh century ancestor of the Stuarts and FitzAlans, and "certainly came from Brittany, and occurs there about 1075 as Fledald, the younger brother and heir of Alan, the seneschal of Dol. In "Notes and Queries" (7th Series, 6:355) Ellis further explains his careful research and its conclusion. Also see http://www.medievalgenealogy.org.uk/sources/round/stewarts1.shtml for this line which also reports "Fleanchus ... is the Latinised form of Flann-chu, the Red or Ruddy Dog ... and is also a sobriquet - the Bloodhound. ... This nomenclature is evidently a reminiscence of the dog-totem or dog-divinity...." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fleance offers: "Fleance and his father Banquo are both fictional characters presented as historical fact by Hector Boece, whose Scotorum Historiae (1526-27) was a source for Raphael Holinshed's Chronicles, a history of the British Isles popular in Shakespeare's time. In the Chronicles, Fleancein fear of Macbeth - flees to Wales and marries Nesta, daughter of Gruffydd ap Llywelyn, the last native Prince of Wales. They have a son named Walter who makes his way back to Scotland and is appointed Royal Steward. According to legend, he fathered the Stuart monarchs of England and Scotland. The Stuarts used their connection with Fleance and his marriage to the Welsh princess to claim a genealogical link with the legendary King Arthur. This, they hoped, would strengthen the legitimacy of their claim to the throne.[3] In 1722, however, Richard Hay, a Scottish historian, presented strong evidence that not only was James not a descendant of Fleance, but also that neither Fleance nor Banquo ever even existed. Most modern scholars now agree that Fleance is not a real historical figure."

[10627] "Standing Before The Mast," by Mark E. Honey (published in the Castine Patriot, Castine, ME, 17 July 2003, p. 8) William "Wescott settled at what is now North Castine. His descendents would later build at least two homes on his old homestead, which are still standing today. Capt. Wescott probably built his first home near the Bagaduce River, complete with his own wharf. His farm was also the site of an artillery battery during the Revolution, and in a strange twist of fate, he may have occupied the same property once owned and occupied by Baron de St. Castin. Westcott was living at 'Majabagaduce' as early as 1762, though the earliest date in his ledger is February 20, 1763. Wescott was perhaps the first trader on the Bagaduce, providing we do not include Castin and others from the 17th and early 18th centuries. As such, we have at least three different places of trade for the early settlers, first at Fort Pownal on Cape Jellison, begun in 1759, second at Wescott's on the Bagaduce, and third at Watson's at Naskeag. ...Wescott appears to have had a sloop named the 'Frankeforte.' The vessel carried goods of local flour, cloth, molasses, meal, tobacco, iron work of all kinds, crockery and ducke (canvas). The West Indies also provided a market for dried fish, shingles and timber, and in return, provided molasses, sugar and rum." His ledger is in the Wilson Museum, Castine. His home was opposite Trott's Point, now Hatch's point. For a detailed history of the area, see "Penobscot,Maine 1761-2011," Mark E. Honey (Bangor, ME: Snowman Printing, 2011) [distrubted by the Penobscot Historical Society]. For more from Mark E. Honey about William Wescott, see "Wilson Museum Bulletin, Vol. 5, No. 16 (Autumn 2017)," (Castine, ME: Wilson Museum, 2017), pp. 1-3, 6. "Maine, Marriages, 1771-1907," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/F465-VTT : accessed 17 Mar 2013) reports his marriage with Elizabeth Perkins occured at York 30 Oct 1757.
