[883] Thomas deposed 30 March 1658 that he was then about 54 years old. He was probably among the founders on Gloucester on Cape Ann. He resided near the meeting house there, adjoining the pastor's lot. In Sept., 1647 Thomas acquired three acres of marsh along the south side of Little River. He probably arrived in America about 1640 from the west of England (or Wales), perhaps with the party of his neighbor, the Rev. Richard Blinman. His estate inventory lists a small fortune for his time: 133 pounds and 5 shillings, including "books" at 10 shillings - indicating a literate and successful man. {See "Seven Generations of Bray," William M. The former is probably named with Old French bray 'marsh', the latter from the Cornish element bre 'hill'." - source: Dictionary of American Family Names ©2013, Oxford University Press.
