1st Wife: Louise Smith (Louisa Schmitt), m. July 11, 1887 in Mishawaka, St. Joseph County, Indiana. The marriage license, dated June 21, 1887 has "Louise Smith". But the bottom half completed by the officiant has "Louisa Schmitt". On the 1900 census, Cora (12) and Myrtle (10) are living with their grandparents, Nicholas and Mary Schmitt. The grandparents memorials are "Schmitt".
-------------------------------------------------

However, in 1903, a woman named Bessie Elizabeth Norman claimed to be Della's sister and Della's only heir. She sued William and the executor, claiming that William and Della were never legally married, and that William had a living wife in Wisconsin (1903 news articles). Mrs. Norman claimed Della's true name was Della McCloskey.
