[47667] "The Akron Beacon Journal, 17 September 1959," p. 3: "Ward Joseph Motz, veteran engineer of the Klages Coal & Ice CO., became ill Wednesday while at work and was dead on arrival at St. Thomas Hospital a few minutes later. Mr. Motz attended funeral services for his brother, Eldon, Tuesday In Massillon. It is believed the shock of his brother's passing contributed to Mr. Motz' death. He worked for the Klages firm 58 years. Company officials and employes honored Mr. Motz in 1951 at a party celebrating his 50th anniversary with the firm. He was presented with an easy chair, but he said at the time he didn't plan to use it much as he would keep on working. Mr. Motz started with Klages in 1901 at Summit and Bluff sts. At the time this was the only ice manufacturing plant in this section of the country. His first job was as driver of a one-horse coal wagon. He delivered coal then at 500 pounds for $1. Later he was given an ice route in East Akron, then known as Middlebury, but he was ambitious to be a stationary engineer. Mr. Motz studied engineering by correspondence and eventually passed the State examination. He held a first class rating he received 46 years ago. Born in Shalersville, he had lived in Akron since he was two months old. He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge 50 years. Mr. Motz. whose home was at 1750 Brittain rd., leaves his wife, Helen; two sons, William and Eldon of Akron; four daughters, Ruth Smith of Canfield, Marian Lingo and Mildred Wallace of Cuyahoga Falls, and Jean Williams of Akron; 17 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Bessie James of Loyal Oak. The Rev. Donald Powers will conduct services at 1 p. m. Saturday In the Adams Funeral Home where friends may call after 1 p. m. Friday. Burial will be in Hillside Memoriai Park."
