[2310] Mary's ancestry is given in "The Plantagenet Ancestry," W.H.Turton (Balt.: Gen. Pub. Co.,1968), p. 58. Ernst-Friedrich Kraentzler, "The Ancestry of Richard Plantagenet and Cecily de Nevill..." (Salt Lake City: Accelerated Indexing Systems, 1978), states that Mary was born in 1175 and died at Montpellier in 1219. The dates above, and for her marriage, are from "Ancestral Roots..." (Balt., 1992) 105-28. Cf. http://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/TOULOUSE%20NOBILITY.htm. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cousin/html/p77.htm reports: "She stated herself to be upwards of fifteen years old in 1197. She became the lawful heir, despite two half brothers of a later marriage, and thus Lady of Montpellier, on her father's death in 1202. She was twice married before she became Queen of Aragon; her first husband, Barral of Marseilles, had died prematurely and her second, the Count of Comminges, who had two wives living at the time of his union with Maria, had repudiated her. A contract for the marriage of Marie de Montpellier and Pere II 'el Católico', rey de Aragón was signed on 15 June 1204. Her 3rd. She married Pere II 'el Católico', rey de Aragón, son of Alfonso II 'el Casto', rey de Aragón y Cataluña and Sancha Alfonsez de Castilla, on 25 June 1208 in Montpellier, France; His 3rd marriage, to Mary, greatly extended Aragonese power into southern France. She died in April 1213 in Rome, Latiun, Italy. Having gone to Rome to plead with the Pope to restore her marriage to King Pedro, he did so, but she died in only a few weeks later."
