[29406] AKA Calvin Everett Motz. NSDAR application for member 634462 (1996) - Everett m. (1) 13 June 1868 Elmira Elizabeth Shieves (b. 20 May 1845 in IN, d. 20 March 1925 in Selden, KS) and had Charles Washington Motz (b. 19 Feb 1871 at Akron, OH, d. 23 Nov 1938 at Hays, KS, m. 1 Feb 1898 Martha Bain [b. 18 Nov 1875 in Knox Co., KY, d. 12 April 1964 in Levant, KS]). His grave marker has "Calvin E. Motz". "The Seldon Observer [Seldon, Kansas],20 October 1921," pp. 1 & 3: "A cloud of sandness passed over this community the first of the week when the news of tne death of E. C. Motz was received here. Mr. Motz was one this countrys early settlers, coming to Old Sheridan during the summer '79. He had seen the counry grow from a few settlers with their simple 'sodie' homes to a rich and prosperous eoramun ity. He saw and went thru the grasshopper scourge, when the 'hoppers came on and on in a great dense cloud., so dense it darkened the noonday sun, and when they had passed not a sign of plant life was visible, where the day before had stood glorious fe!ds of wheat and corn; he stayed on thru the following months that tried the patience and endurance of the strongest hearted pioneer men and women. During the early davs he kept store at Old Sheridan and ran stage lines to Grainfield and Lucerne, to Kenneth (now Hoxie) up to Achilies and Stile about two miles west of Harry Roberts place on the Sarpa. When the old Central Branch railroad, (now the Missouri Pacific) failed to come on up the Solomon valley from Lenora on westward to Denver and then when the Rock Island didn't run thru the town, Mr. Motz joined the many who moved up to Selden in '80s. E. C. Motz was born June 12, 1845 in Union county, Penn., passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. R, Lookhart, at Syracuse, Kansas, October 14, 1921. Aged 76 years, 4 months, and 2 days. He moved to Akron, Ohio, in 1860, where he was married on June 13, 1868, to Mis Elizabeth Shives. They both united with the Lutheran church at Uniontown, Ohio. In 1876 they moved to Ottumwa, Iowa, where they made their home for two years. In 1878 they located at Beloit and came soon after to Sheridan county, settling at Old Sheridan in the summer of 1879, where as pioneers they struggled to put this county on the map. Into this home came seven children, Georgre C. Motz, Berthoud, Colorado, Charles W. and Sam of Selden, Mrs. Cora Diert, El Paso, Texas, Maggie who died at the age of ten, Mrs. Lydia Warner, of Brewster, Kansas and Mrs. Pearl E. Lookhart of Syracuse, Kansas. Besides a wife and six child ren he leaves 18 grandchildren and 8 great-grand children and friends by the score who will miss this old time friend and comrade. In 1888 Mr. Motz came to Selden from Old Sheridan and conducted a hotel and livery barn. Later he sold out and went to Dresden, but eventually returned to Selden where he made his home until a year when he and his wife went to Syracuse to make ther home with their daughter, Mrs. Lookhart. Some time ago he suffered a bad fall which together with an attack of asthma caused hia death last Friday. He could do a full days work in the harvest fields right up to this year and thoroly enjoyed it - he has often outworked some of the young men and greatly enjoyed their discomforture. He was a member of the Odd Fellow lodge. The funeral services were conduoted Wednesday at the Methodist church by Rev. WeIIs. Interment was made in the Selden cemetery. The I. O. O. F. had charge of the services at the grave."
