Unverified information from Genserv (via Internet), 11/95 states that Thurston is son of William Talvas Montgomery Despencer and Alix Ala de Burgogne and was born at Elington, Lincolnshire, and m. ca. 1126 at London. This source also gives further children: Lord Walter (b. ca. 1148 at Stalney, Lincolns.), Sheriff Almaric (b. ca. 1150 at Ryhall, Rutland, m. Amabil Chesnei, dau. of Walter de Chesnei), Hugh (b. ca. 1152 at Ryhall, d. 1199) and Geoffrey (b. ca. 1155 at Marlow, Buckinghamshire).
"Falaise Roll" (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1994), p. 91: "There are two le Despensiers entered in Domesday. William, an under-tenant in Kent, who occurs on the Dives list, and Robert. What relationship existed between them, if any, is not known. Robert, steward to the Conqueror, was a great baron who held large possessions in Leicester, Lincoln, Warwick and Worcester. He was the younger brother of Ours d'Abbetot, and assumed the surname le Despensier. He was a despoiler of the monks of Worcester, from whom he took the manor of Elmly, which he never returned, and was witness to many of the Conqueror's most important charters. Whether he left posterity is in doubt; he was however succeeded by William and Thurston le Despensier, stewards to Henry I, who may be presumed to have been his sons. Whether Hugh, who held the great office of justice of England, in 1259, was descended from Thurston, as Sir Egerton Brydges asserts, or from a Hugh, who was sheriff of Shropshire and Staffordship in 1223, as well as constable of the royal castles of Shrewsbury, Bruges and Bolsover, which Dugdale affirms, is unknown. Another theory is that Hugh was descended from the Duttons of Cheshire, descendants of Otard, a baron of Chester, under Hugh Lupus. However this may be, the fact remains that from this celebrated judiciary descended the earsl of Sunderland and Spencer, the dukes of Marlborough and Barons Churchill." Cf. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cousin/html/p200.htm.
http://www.aritek.com/hartgen/htm/spencer.htm gives Thurston's descent from Amaury Raoul D'Albetot through his son, Robert Despencer ("One of the Norman knights, who accompanied William's order of knights, was Robert the Dispencer. He had fought along side William in his invasion of England, and was rewarded by William for his support with land grants in County Bedford. His children who took the surname, married into the royal blood which descended from English, French and Spanish royalty lines. In 1086 Robert was granted the Motte and the Bailey Castle in Tamworth Burgess."), and through Robert's son, William Talvas Montgomery Despencer ("was born in 1100 in Elington, Lincolnshire, England. . . . William married Alix Ala de Bourgogne. Alix was born about 1040 in Elington, Lincolnshire, England. She was the daughter of Duke Eudes Borel I de Bourgogne and Sibylle de Bourgogne")(father of Thurston).
