Charles Hinckley, reports that the family name likely originated from the town Hinckley in Leicestershire, ca. 90 miles NW of London near the geographical center of England. The first of the name appears to be Roger de Hynkeley who possessed Westgate manor in Co. Kent and d. ca. 1363-5. He is grandson of Ralph de Mortimer of Wigmore who is in the Domesday Book and whose father Roger de Mortimer (d.c.1086) was Seigneur of Mortemer-sur-Eaulne in Normandy.
