[1713] Sancho made a pilgrimage to Rome and became a papal vassal. The pope now formed an alliance with the Christians in the Iberian peninsula to drive out the Muslims. Many Frenchmen crossed the Pyrenees in the coming decades to aid in the reconquest of Spain. Sancho took his cousin's kingdom of Navarre and added it briefly to his domains. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cousin/html/p86.htm offers: "He was the son of Ramiro I, rey de Aragón and Gilberga de Couserans. He married Felicité de Roucy, daughter of Hilduin IV, comte de Montdidier and Alix, comtesse de Roucy, in 1060; His 2nd. He succeeded his father to the throne of Aragón in 1063. He feared imperial Leonese-Castilian domination, and tried the radical expedient of enlisting papal, French, and Catalan collaboration for a kind of proto-crusade against the moors. King of Aragón in Spain, between 8 May 1063 and 1094. He made Aragon a fief of the papacy, so as to give his kingdom's independence a papal shield, in 1068.6 He succeeded his first cousin, Sancho IV of Navarre, to the Navarrese throne, when the latter's son, Ramiro II was disinherited, and with the consent of the Navarrese themselves, in 1076. King of Pamplona in Navarre, Spain, between 4 June 1076 and 1094. He took Estada in 1087. He placed his kingdoms under the feudal protection of the Holy See in 1089. He took Monzón in 1089.6 He built the fortress of El Castellar threatening Saragossa. He married Mahaut, comtesse de Toulouse, daughter of Guillaume IV, comte de Toulouse and Emma de Mortaigne, before 1094; His 3rd(?). Her 1st. He died on 6 July 1094 in Huesca, Aragón, Spain, at age 51 years. While besieging Huesca, he was fatally wounded by an arrow." Also see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sancho_Ramírez. Cf. She was later employed at Ward Brothers at the Maine Mall in South Portland. After retirement, she became active in the Order of the Eastern Star, Deering Chapter, and served in many of the offices of that organization, being chosen twice to be its Worthy Matron. She was especially proud of and took great satisfaction from her association with the Star and enjoyed the many friends she made there.
