Ancestry.com offers: "Montfort Name Meaning - French and English (of Norman origin): habitational name from any of the numerous places called Montfort, from Old French mont hill (see Mont 1) + fort strong, impregnable (Latin fortis). A Norman bearer of this name, from Montfort-sur-Risle in Eure, near Brionne, accompanied William the Conqueror in his invasion of England in 1066."

[17524] James came to Penobscot in 1786 and settled at the Head of Northern Bay - his lot included what in 1997 is the Penobscot Nursing Home, the Methodist Church and the Town Hall. His children are from the York VR - these children were baptized 12 Nov 1787 as children of "Allice" (presumably James was in Penobscot preparing a home for the family). He is buried in the family cemetery, now part of the Bay Cemetery. The unverified Christine Bergstrom Family Tree in Ancestry.com in 2016 offers: "James Leach was born on March 8, 1738, in York County, Maine, the child of Nehemiah and Ruth. He married Alice Freeman and they had one son together. He then married Hazadiah Keith in 1765. He died on February 13, 1822, in Penobscot, Maine, having lived a long life of 83 years, and was buried there." This link to Nehemiah and Ruth must be documented!
