[32075] The "Richland Shield & Banner - March 24, 1888": " Rachel Wells was born in Huntington County, Pa., August 26th., 1811, and died at her home in Franklin Township, Richland Co., Ohio, March 12th., 1888, aged 76 years, 6 months and 16 days. Her maiden name was Keith, daughter of Michael Keith. She came to Ohio in company with her parents when 6 years of age and became a resident of this county, April 14th., 1831, when she was married to Geo. Wells, her husband, who now survives to mourn her loss. In the spring of 1832, Mr. Wells erected the first log cabin on the farm upon which they then moved, and where they have ever since resided together up to the date of her death. Fifty-seven years they were permitted to travel life's pathway together, side by side, and to share and bear with each other the joys and sorrows as well as the labors and privations incident to pioneer life. There were born to them nine children -- three boys and six girls. One boy and two girls died some years ago. There were also born to them 42 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. John Wells, her eldest son, is living in Josephine Co., Oregon. Michael Wells, her youngest son, is living in Allen Co., Ohio. Three daughters, Mrs. Fackler, Mrs. Cline and Mrs. Morthland, are living in Franklin Tp., Richland Co., Ohio and another daughter, Mrs. Light, is living in Columbus Grove, Putnam Co., Ohio. They and their aged and bereaved father are called upon to mourn the loss of a faithful and devoted wife and a kind and loving mother, but they mourn not as they who have no hope. Mother is not dead, but gone before, awaiting their coming to join her in the glory world. The deceased and her husband united with the Baptist Society at Harmony church in sight of their own home during the pastorate of Elder A. Morthland, 22 years ago. She lived a faithful and consistent member of the church of her choice up to the time of her death. For the last two years she was deprived of the pleasure and enjoyment of church fellowship and the blessings of the sanctuary. She ever continued to put her trust in the Lord and found Him previous to her during her affliction as well as in the hour of her death. She manifested unusual Christian patience and resignation during her years of sickness and suffering, and when death came found her ready, expressing a desire to go home and be at rest, and thus she breathed her last calmly and serenely. May the Lord enable us all to meet her in heaven. The funeral sermon was preached by her pastor, Rev. H. McLaughlin, at the Harmony Baptist meeting house."

AKA Phinehas Pratt. See notes for his father, Henry Pratt.
This line is from Clifford E. Odenkirk's web site in 2003: http://www.odenkirk.com/html/fam01601.htm - it is NOT verified. It gives Phineas' father as Henry Pratt (b. ca. 1560 in St. Mary's, Watford, Hertford to John Pratt, b. ca. 1530). Attached is this: "HISTORY OF CENTRAL NEW YORK by Wm Cutter, 1912, p. 646: The Pratt family is of Norman Stock, the name appearing in Anglicized form in France early in the Middle Ages. It is derived from the Latin Pre, Preaux, Prairie. The barony of Pratella existed near Rouen, on the Seine below Paris, early in the eleventh century. It's Lord, Le Sire de Preaux followed William the Conqueror to England in 1066, his name being fund on the Roll of Battle Abbey as having been present at the Battle of Hastings. Thirty years later, in 1096, a Sire De Preaux followed Duke Robert of Normandy, the eldest son of William the Conqueror, on the First Crusade. Two of his Kinsmen, William and Johon, accompanied him. John de pratelles was a favorite minister of King Richard the First (Coeur de Lion). Two brothers, William and Peter de Pratelles, followed Richard on the Third Crusade n 1189-91. William saved the king from capture in a skirmish with the Saracens by allowing himself to be captured, pretending that he was the king. He was later exchanged for ten emirs, and was knighted for his valor. Documents connect him with Rowen, where the barony of Pratella was located. A Seigneur de Preaux was killed at the head of his household in the battle of Agincourt in 1415. Other historical searches show that there were 5 distinct branches of the Pratt family that came to America. The above could be our line or it could not be. The N.Y. branch are definitely a different line from the ones who eventually came to Ohio from Mass. and N. Y. Rev. Henry Pratt, the father of Phinehas, was imprisoned for preaching the gospel contrary to the rules of the Established Church of England. Henry and about 400 other Nonconformist ministers and teachers were confined in damp and gloomy jails in England for the same offense. While thus incarcerated, he managed to communicate with his distressed family, by writing them with the blood which he drew from his arm for the purpose. This story is related by Abigail Pratt, the granddaughter of Phinehas, and daughter of Aaron. Whether Henry died in jail or was released and lived for a few years in now unknown. There was even one brief reference that he might have come to New England, but this cannot be proven. The Non-conformist label was attached to those eminent churchmen of about 1550 who refused to subscribe to the Liturgy and ceremonies practiced by the Established Church of England."
The Web site http://www.mayflowerfamilies.com/diaries/phineas_pratt_journey.htm in 2003 offers: Bradford says, referring to Phineas, and his dangerous undertaking: "In ye meane time, came one of them from ye Massachucts with a small pack at his back, and though he knew not a foot of ye way yet he got safe hither, but lost his way, which was well for him for he was pursued, and so was mist. Phineas Pratt of Plymouth and Charlestown (MD IV,3 135). Phineas Pratt was among those who did not return to England. He stayed in Plymouth, living to be "About 90 yrs." and married Mary2 Priest (Degory1). He had six sons, Aaron, Samuel, Daniel and Joseph John (RI) and Peter. Phineas died in Charlestown April 19, 1680, and was buried in the Old Burying Ground. He was born about 1593, as is shown by his deposition. His wife survived him, dying probably just prior to July 22, 1689, for on that date there is the following entry in the town orders: Then Mr Jacob Green Senr & Mr Eleazr Phillips were & are Impowered to Apprize the goods of Widd. Pratt who lately deed at Tho Barbar. . ."
(MD IV, 3, 133+) "In 1662 he presented to the General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony that interesting and valuable paper which he called "A Decliration of the Afaires of the Einglish People that first Inhabited New Eingland." Either accompanying or following this document was a petition on which the General Court took the following action May 7 of the same year (1662): (Mass. Bay Rcdls., IV:402) In Ansr: to. ye petition of. phineas Prat. of charls Toune. who presented this Court wth a narrative of the streights & hardships that the first planters of this Colony underwent in their endeavors to plant themselves at plimouth. & since wherof he was. one The Court judgeth it meet to Graunt him Three. hundred acres of land where it is to be had not hindering a plantation ."
In October, 1668, Phineas, then about 75 years old, presented another petition to the General Court at Boston in which, while expressing his thankfulness for the grant of land made him three years before in answer to his first petition, he refers to his physical infirmities and present lack of the actual necessities of life and entreats that he may receive some measure of support in his old age. "Three times we fought with them, thirty miles I was pursued for my life, in time of frost, and snow, as a deer chased with wolves. Two of our men were kill'd in warr, one shot in the shoulder. It was not by the wit of man, nor by ye strength of the arme of flesh, that we prevailed against them. But God, that overrules all power, put fear in their hearts. And now seeing God hath added a New England to old Engl. and given both to our dread Soverg Lord King Charles the second, many thousand people enjoy the peace thereof; Now in times of prosperity, I beseech you consider the day of small things; for I was almost frozen in time of our weak beginnings, and now am lame. My humble request is for that may be for my subsistence the remaining time of my life. And I shall be obliged. Your thankfull servant, Phinehas Pratt." His request was summarily denied: The Deputyes Doe not Judge meete to graunt this petition, wth refference to the consent of or Honoed magists. hereto. William Torrey, Cleric.
Old, lame and unable to adequately provide for himself, it was his townspeople who ultimately cared for him until the end as can be seen by numerous Town Orders in his behalf.
