John, the faithful pastor of the Pilgrims of Plymouth Rock, was one of the most remarkable men that Gloucester ever produced - of great strength and personal courage. He was a ship-master and builder of vessels - built the first schooner-rigged vessel, and gave that name to that class of vessels. [1012] Emanuel (also spelled Immanuel) was one of the early settlers of Taunton, MA where his father-in-law conveyed fifty acres to him and Abigail 10 June 1703. See "Ancestors and Descendants of Joshua Williams and John Collar," Christine R. Brown (typescript - Knoxville, TN; Campbell, Inc.). He served in the First Foot Military Company of Taunton, MA in 1710 (- Hist. of Taunton, p. 357 - which reproduces his signature). See "Emmanuel Williams of Taunton, Mass., and Some of His Descendants," by John Oliver Williams (NEHGR [1903] 57:75ff.). Ancestry.com suggests the origin of the surname: "English (also very common in Wales): patronymic from William."
