[5563] James came to the throne at the age of six, after his father was assassinated, and lived with his mother and sisters at Dunbar Castle. In 1439, the young king's mother and her husband Sir John Stewart were placed under house arrest at Stirling Castle until they agreed to hand James to Sir Alexander Livingston, one of the nobles who had been ruling in James II's name. James II died as a cannon exploded during the siege of Roxburgh Castle. "A soldier's king, James was impulsive and masterful, with the charm and versatility of the Stewarts." - Encycl. Brit., '56, 12:881. For his descendants, see "A Companion to Scottish History...," Ian Donnachie and George Hewitt (NY: Facts of File, 1989), Genealogical Tables. James II also left an illegitimate son, Sir John, of Sticks, ancestor of the Steuarts of Ballechin (see BURKEs L.G. 1952 Edn.). Cf. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_II_of_Scotland.
