[52148] "The Ellsworth American [Ellsworth, Maine], 23 October 2019": "Winter Harbor - Alfreda Mae (Sargent) Bacon was born April 1, 1920, to Martha (Young) Sargent and Montelle Sargent of South Gouldsboro. She attended Winter Harbor schools until her 1937 graduation. Alfreda excelled in sports during her school years, especially basketball. She then moved to Lynn, Mass., where she attended cosmetology school and worked at Woolworths. After returning to Winter Harbor, Alfreda married Linwood Workman and was employed as a telephone operator (her favorite job) and worked the counter at J.M. Gerrish drugstore. During her second marriage to CTTC Clyde Sam Bacon, U.S. Navy, Alfreda began living in various corners of the world and made many friends. When Sam retired from the Navy, they moved to Stout, Iowa, where they lived for 22 years. There she was embraced by her Iowa families. She worked occasionally at Cattle Congress Fair in Waterloo. Alfreda was active in Rubie Chapter No. 31 OES and remained a lifetime member in Irene Chapter No. 97. She served on various committees in the towns in which she lived and worked the polls during elections until the year she passed. Alfreda proudly held the Boston Post Cane award for five years as the oldest resident of Winter Harbor. She was the fourth member of her family to do so. Being the descendent of the Hammonds, Youngs and Sargents, Alfreda was often asked historical questions regarding events, places and people of Winter Harbor. She loved her town. Her children and grandchildren were sources of pride and joy for her. She is survived by her daughter, Aletha Pung (Workman), and husband, Andy, of Franklin; her son, Lloyd A. Bacon, of Waterloo, Iowa; grandchildren, Jason Reckner and friend Sarah Lester of Steuben; David Reckner and wife, Tracey, of Sykesville, Md.; great-grandchildren, Aedon, Collin, Sam, Jarrett and Lena Reckner. She is also survived by her sisters, Louise Shaw of Winter Harbor, Judy Rayburn Young of Conover, N.C.; sisters-in-law Weltha Sargent of Winter Harbor and Lucille Bass of Shell Rock, Iowa ; her Iowa families, the Bacons, Basses, Pennings and Moores. Alfreda leaves many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends whom she loved dearly. Constant visitors in her later years included Grace Gerrish, Diana Young and Charlotte Boyd. She so enjoyed these visits. Her Navy friends were special to Alfreda and a few made it a point to stay in touch. Alfreda loved the flag (and you had better use proper flag ettiquite), her Red Sox (even though there was a lot of grumbling this year), watching sports and doing crossword puzzles. This remarkable woman slipped away peacefully in her sleep on Oct. 18, 2019, to join those who had gone before her, whom she had missed for a long time. These include her mother, her husband, Clyde Sam, her brother, Maurice Sargent, sister, Elaine Sargent, many friends and family."
