[4675] http://www.lasr.net/pages/city.php?City_ID=KS0812011 offers in 2007: "LaCrosse was filed in 1876 as an original town site by the Missouri-Pacific Railroad when Rush County was re-surveyed two years after it was organized, making this location the exact center of the county. The land belonged to patentee and surveyor, Denman A. Stubbs, and wife, Ellen Jewell Stubbs, who came from Wisconsin and settled in 1874. These early settlers were the first developers of LaCrosse. Lots in the town were soon sold to young men, mostly members of the Society of Friends, from Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Eastern Kansas."

[47654] Find A Grave memorial 142154068 offers: "A letter written by Frances Wood (cousin) to George S Wood from Sargentville, Maine. in August 1896, Your father [Jonathan Fisher Wood] came here the 22nd of April, 1882. He said he had been living in Greenland, Colorado, He made his home with us until September 1893. when he left us and went among his relatives in Blue Hill, Maine. We expected him back and he probably would have come if he had lived a little longer. The first winter, he lived with my sister in the town of Penobscot. The next, and last of his life, he stayed with a niece in Blue Hill. He had heart trouble, and his mind had failed a great deal. Otherwise he was well, so that he cut her firewood. She is a widow and lives a half mile back from the road, and a mile from her nearest neighbor. On the morning of May 3 1885 (age 80) he went out and set fire to a brush heap; it was very dry and the fire spread. He worked hard all day fighting it. Was so tired and frightened he could not eat any supper, and at nine o'clock at night he went out again. His niece says she tried to stop him. but he WOULD go. He said if he did not put it out, he would have to go to state prison and he would rather die than go there. She followed him but lost sight of him - he did not return. In the morning, a search was made and he was found dead and his body half consumed by the fire. It is thought he died of heart disease; was dead before the fire reached him. He lay on his face, one hand grasping a small green tree. The grass was green under him. His face was not burned. He was found at 10 o'clock in the forenoon and the fire had burned but a little way beyond him. So we hope that his death was painless. His remains were wrapped in a quilt and put in a casket and placed in the tomb until arrangements were made for the burial. It was all that could be done under the circumstances. My sister's son took charge of his things and paid expenses - he had no money. A half dollar and a few pennies were picked up where he lay. He was the last of a family of 14 children. He is buried beside his father in Seaside Cemetary, Blue Hill. They are the only ones buried in the lot."
