[50992] "The Ellsworth American [Ellsworth, Maine], 28 July 2022": "Bucksport - Ashley Eugene Coombs, 91, most treasured husband of Barbara A. Coombs, crossed over July 6, 2022, at home in the arms of his wife. He was born on March 2, 1931, in Bucksport, the son of Basil J. and Jennie E. (Eastman) Coombs. He was a member of the last class of students to attend the Duck Cove School on Route 46, now known as 'The Little Yellow School.' A member of the Class of 1949 at Bucksport High School, following graduation Ashley enlisted in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He was stationed at F. E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, Wyo., earning the rank of sergeant and serving as a communications instructor. While in the service, he saved enough money to buy a brand new, coral, hardtop Chevy convertible. Through the years, Ashley faithfully kept in contact with the many friends he had made during that time. He was a proud veteran and became an avid reader focusing on books pertaining to the history of World War II. After he was discharged, Ashley returned to Maine and worked three years for Central Maine Power before becoming employed by New England Telephone and Telegraph (Ma Bell) for nearly 30 years. He retired in 1984, just in time to enjoy becoming a grandfather to Billy and begin planning many trips throughout the United States, accompanied by Barbara and their most favorite cat. Later on, a winter home in Ocala, Fla., was purchased where they enjoyed new experiences. Ashley was a longtime member of the Rising Sun Lodge, No. 71 of Orland, the Maine Academy of Country Music and the Duck Cove Community Club. For many years he and Barbara devoted their time and energy to making repairs and planning fundraisers to maintain and preserve that historic building, 'The Little Yellow School'. He was predeceased by brothers Dick and Russ; stepson, Allen Cyr; sister-in-law, Edie Coombs; great friends, Trygve Hoel, Russell Doyle and Donnie Barker; and all of his favorite kitties. Ashley will be dearly missed by Barbara, his wife of nearly 40 years; daughter, Karen Lander and her partner, Deb Davis, and stepson Bret H. Cyr and his daughters, all of Florida; his grandson, William Ashley Lander, and fiancée, Melanie Rines, his great-granddaughter, Raegan (Josie) Lander, and his great-grandson, Ryan William Lander, all of New Hampshire; cousins, Bill and Christine Gilfillan of Hampden; a very special nephew, who he considered a son, Lamont Coombs Jr. and wife, Maureen; a special sister-in-law, Emmie Coombs, and her daughter, Erna Pontillo, of Arizona; nieces, nephews and a brother, Lamont Coombs Sr. Ashley considered Cleo Redman and Helga Swanson to be his 'almost daughters' and enjoyed close friendships with Don and Joyce Unterseher, Tony and Jill Pimentel, Jim MacDonald, Jason Staples, Henry Violette and many, many others. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Dr. Laura Bridgman for her exception care of this wonderful man."

[23690] From http://www.iterativity.com/Genealogy/fg05/fg05_451.html --> Robertson. Materials for the history of Thomas Becket, 7 vols, Rolls Series, London 1875-85, II p255-7; in Latin: A second miracle performed on James de Clare, son of Roger Earl of Hertford and Matilda of St Hilary. Some weeks after his recovery, namely in the middle of the following Lent, James was seized by another sickness and breathed his last. His mother had set out to church to attend divine service; members of the household had remained at home. There was no one found to announce the the death of the boy to the mother, lest he should be said to have been the cause of the calamity. At length a little boy, the brother of the dead infant, ran to the church (it is known for a fact that no boy keeps a secret) and exclaimed over and over again to his mother, "Madam, my brother is dead. Madam, my brother is dead." At once she turned pale and jumped up, and throwing off her cloak ran back to the house. She found the infant taken out of the chamber into the large outer hall, with his mouth open, but inwardly without breath, the tongue and lips retracted, the eyes sunk and with only the white of the eye to be seen, cold and stiff, and so to speak briefly, well and truly dead. She seized him in her arms and said "St. Thomas, restore my son to me. When he had a hernia previously you restored him to health. Now he is dead restore him to life, holy martyr." Moreover she ran and took the relics of the saint which she had brought from Canterbury out of a chest. She put the blood of the saint on the mouth of the dead infant and thrust a piece of the cloth into his throat, continuously crying and saying "Holy martyr, Thomas, give me back my son. He will be brought to your tomb if he revives. I will visit you on bare feet. Hear me." But all the knights who stood by, and also the countess of warwick and the rest of the women, told her to be quiet. Yet she knelt with bare knees again and again on the ground, and cried much more, "Holy martyr, have mercy on me." Then her chaplain Lambert, a respected man of good age, spoke: "How are you behaving, my lady? You are acting foolishly. You are being stupid. What you are doing and saying smacks of madness. Surely the Creator should be allowed to do what he wishes with his creature. Stop! Put down the infant, and let him be treated as dead. It is the height of stupidity for you to strive for what is impossible to obtain." Everyone spoke similarly. However, she said, "I will certainly not stop, nor will I put down the infant, for I trust that he will be given back to me. Martyr, glorious martyr, most pious , beloved martyr, have mercy on me; give me back my son." After she had cried in this way for about two hours, the martyr had mercy and restored her infant to life. First there was a sign of red on his face, and after a while he cried and opened his eyes. They blessed the Lord who gives death and life, and goes down to the depths and back. There was great joy in the house, and rejoicing replaced the extremes of grief: "for they obtained joy and gladness; sadness and groans fled away." The countess, mother of the restored boy, took on unaccustomed toil, and setting out to Canterbury on bare feet with the boy performed her promised pilgrimage. There followed the countess of Warwick and many other women, and also the chaplain called Lambert, and many knights who all testified that they had seen the boy both truly dead and truly restored to life.

"Bill" served as a Captain in the Army Air Corp during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart because he was wounded in action 13 July 1944. He enlisted and became a B-17 bomber pilot in the 8th Air CorpI. His air base was near Ridgefield, England. He was in the air over the English Channel on D-Day on a mission. On his 21st mission to Germany they lost two engines soon after taking off and were forced to crash land in a wheat field near their Air Base. He spent two years in and out of hospitals. He became a teacher and among other schools taught at the Lake Weir High School, South Marion Co. FL in the early 1960s. He served as Executive Secretary of the Florida Consortium of Colleges and Universities for Real Estate Education and was a family historian.
Bill joined the Army Air Corps in 1943, flying to England as an 8th Air Force B-17 pilot. Completing 21 missions between 5/5/1944 and 7/13/1944, he spoke with wonder of the D-Day mission over Normandy, and the thousands of transport ships filling the Channel. His final mission ended with a wheels-up crash landing in an English wheat field, killing 7 of 9 crew, as all bombs exploded and burned. Bill spent three years in hospitals and medically retired as a Captain. Honors: The Purple Heart, Air Medal, European Campaign, WWII Victory Medal, Voie de La Liberte, French Legion of Honor, and others.
Married in 1944, Bill and Margaret Kenney Scruggs raised three daughters, Ann, Kenney, and Cynthy. After the war, Bill attended UF, earning a BA in Industrial Arts Ed., a BS in Ag. Engineering, and an M.Ed.Amin.
Bill lived and worked in the communities of Monticello, Starke, Marianna, East Lake Weir, Titusville, and Gainesville, Fl. Always active in the community, he joined and served in leadership roles in Florida Blue Key; Kiwanis Club; Elks; Moose; Exchange; Retired Officers; American Legion; Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity; community theatre; Girl Scouts; Girl Scout camp development; briefly a pilot with the Civil Air Patrol; Red Cross; Lake Weir Chamber of Commerce; Marion County Democratic Committee; active life long Democrat; FFA mentor and advisor; Swing & Sway Dance Club; and served the USO to secure funds in Lake and Marion Counties. He took FFA students to two national conventions. Bill started a company providing central Florida dairies with artificial insemination services and also managed beehives, harvesting honey for many years. He received many awards, including the Governor's State Conservation Award, Valley Forge Freedom Teacher's Award, Freedom Foundation Citizens Award, and three National Science Awards. He took great pride in his work with the FFA, especially the years teaching at Lake Weir High School, and developing innovative classes for young women in Bradford County schools, teaching them basic plumbing, house, and car repair in the early 1950s.
In 1968, Bill shifted from direct instruction to administration of Continuing Education Programming at the University or Florida. After 30 years in teaching and administration, Bill retired from the State of Florida in 1977. He ran his own consulting company until 1981, when he sold the business, retired, and maintained his company in name only - no more work! Some of you have been blessed with items from his WeeWillie Enterprises product line.....alligator milk, dehydrated water, and his special exercise block. He continued to garden, stayed active at church and with fellow veterans, and enjoyed traveling. He was curious and passionate about learning, especially American History. Bill liked to work with his hands, to build things, to travel, to talk to people, to laugh, and to tell stories. He will be missed.
Bill attended Trinity United Methodist Church & was a life member of: The American Legion, VFW, DAV, Order of the Purple Heart, 8th Air Force Society, and D-Day Veterans Club. He visited over 25 countries in Europe, Asia, Oceania, Africa, and the Americas, including all 50 states, 38 state capitols, and 18 National Parks, traveling mostly via military aircraft.
In the two evenings before his death, he planned his memorial service and gave direction on how to finish and distribute his latest project...traffic signal birdhouses.
Bill is survived by two daughters Ann Scruggs, Gainesville, and Cynthy Scruggs, Lafayette, IN; two grandsons, Alexander Smith, Chicago, Il. and Adam Smith, Evansville, In.; his former wife, nieces, nephews, and numerous cousins.
