[6021] See "Brackett Genealogy, Descendants of Anthony Brackett of Portsmouth and Captain Richard Brackett of Braintree. With Biographies of the Immigrant Fathers, Their Sons, and Others of Their Posterity," Herbert Ierson Brackett (1907). Chapter V. Anthony (Jr.) was at Falmouth (now Portland) in 1660, selectman in 1680, assemblyman in 1681 and 1682. He m. (1) Anne Mitton (d. Sandy Beach, NH ca. 1677) and (2) Susannah Drake 19 Nov 1678 (she d. Nov 1719). "History of Portland," by William Willis (1833), includes an account of him and family escaping from the Indians in a stolen birch bark canoe which had been mended by his wife, Ann Mitten. "King Philip's War," Eric C. Schultz and Michael J. Tougias (Woodstock, VT: The Countryman Press, 1999), p. 304 offers: "On August 11,1676 . . . the home of Anthony Brackett on the west side of the Back Cove was assaulted, with Brackett, his wife, and five children carried into captivity. . . . Brackett's home was located on Cleve's Nek, now the downtown area of Portland." Family Tree Maker's "Early New England Settlers" (CD #504) reports "He was lieutenant and captain in the war, and was finally killed at his house 21 Sep. 1689. His son Anthony was also lieutenant and captain in Indian hostilities." [29146] Mary's obituary in The Herald of Truth: "Mary (Hursh) Brenneman, wife of Benjamin Brenneman, was born in Pennsylvania, March the 14th, 1818, and died at her home in Orrville, Ohio, November the 27th, 1887, aged 69 years, 8 months and 13 days. On the 30th she was followed to her last resting place by a large concourse of friends and relatives. She was buried at the Mennonite Church, where services were held by Michael Horst, Michael Rohrer assisted by David Hostetler. She leaves a husband, 6 children, 23 grandchildren and one great-grand child to mourn her loss, but we need not weep as those who have no hope, for we believe our loss is her eternal gain, as we trust she has gone to that beautiful home above, where no sickness, sorrow or pain shall meet her any more. She was kind and loving to all and ever trusted in her Redeemer, looking forward to life eternal. Her place in the Church was never vacant when she was able to go, but as her health had been failing for some years, she was deprived many times of the privilege to be there; yet it was her desire to go. Her place is now vacant and when we go to grandfather's house, we see the vacant chair and think how good, how kind she was. We do not wish her back, but we will try so to live that we can meet her above. She came to Ohio when she was 17 years old, and was married to her surviving husband in 1839. In 1842 they united with the Mennonite Church and lived in its doctrine up to the time of her death." [29690] Johannes served as a Private in the War for Independence. A file in Ancestry.com offers an excerpt from "Floyd's Northumberland Genealogy", p. 542: "SPOTTS. There are two branches of the Spotts family in Lower Mahanoy township, both descended from Sebastian Spat, the ancestor of a numerous family, who was born on the ship while his parents were enroute to America, Feb. 25, 1740. They were natives of Wurtemberg, Germany. After landing at Philadelphia, they proceeded to Berks county, Pa., where they made a permanent home, and where Sebastian Spat passed his youth and early married life. All his children were born there. He brought his family to Northumberland county in an early day, settling in that part of Mahanoy township now known as Lower Mahanoy, where he died March 26, 1802. He was a large land owner, his property being located in the Stone Valley, which region was wild when he located there. The Indians were his neighbors. Among his children were Johannes, Adam and Matthias. The last named lived in the vicinity of Selingsgrove, Snyder Co., Pa., where he is buried, and the Spotts family of that region are his descendants. He was a blacksmith by trade."
