[4855] Robert was the first Lord Clifford. He was killed at the Battle of Bannockburn, SSE of Stirling, Scotland. He was "one of the most powerful barons of his age, won great renown at the siege of Carlaverock castle in 1300, and after taking part in the movement against Edward II's favourite, Piers Gaveston, was killed at Bannockburn. His son Roger, 2nd baron (1300-1322), shared in the rebellion of Thomas, earl of Lancaster, and was probably executed at York on March 23, 1322." {-Encycl. Brit., 1956, 5:811} Cf. http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/CLIFFORD.htm, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_de_Clifford,_1st_Baron_de_Clifford and "The Visitation of Yorkshire in the Years 1563 and 1564," (London: Harleian Society, 1881), p. 60. Constance Hanscom Jellison, "Amherst, Maine", p. 20: "In 1808, Samuel Silsby, Sr. came along with Ashael [sic] Foster and Lucy Bracket Foster who came from Bridgton, Maine." Also see "Mariaville: A History of Wm. Bingham's Settlement on the Union River," Mark E. Honey (typescript at Bangor (ME) Public Library, 1987?), which states Asa(h)el was born at Bridgeton [sic], ME. Bridgton, ME VR lists the marriage intention "Asael Foster, Jr, Bridgton and Lucy Brackett, Otisfield, Intentions posted on Mar 24 1796." See "Foster Genealogy...," Frederick Clifton Pierce (Chicago: W. B. Conkey Co., 1899), p. 171. He is reputed to be one of the first lumbermen to work in the upper reaches of the Union River.
The newspaper "United States Oracle of the Day" - published 11 Oct 1800 in Portsmouth, NH, reported on p. 3, col. 2: "Asael Foster, Jr. had his dwelling house in Bridgton consumed by fire on the 20th ult. [20 Sept 1800]".
"A Gazatteer of the State of Maine," George Jones Varney (Boston: B. B. Russell, 1881), p. 70 states Asael arrived in Amherst, ME by 1808 and that Amherst was part of the Bingham Purchase and was set off from Mariaville in 1822 and incorporated in 1831. He is in the 1820 and 1840 federal census at Amherst.
