He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, New Kingstown, and its Good Shepherd Sunday school class, Mechanicsburg American Legion Post 109, VFW Post 6704, Marine Corps Association, Military Order of the Purple Heart, Eureka Lodge 302 F&AM, Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Harrisburg Forest 43, Samuel C. Perkins R.A. Chapter 209, and a life member of the New Kingstown Fire Company and the DAV. Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Joyce A. Shunk Briner; three sons, Gifford L. of Mechanicsburg, John M. and Robert D., both of Carlisle; two daughters, Jane Price of Carlisle and Marilyn Schreffler of Mechanicsburg; a brother, David R. of New Germantown; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sisters, two brothers, a daughter-in-law and a granddaughter."

Mrs. Briner is the former Joyce Shunk, daughter of Mrs. Reba S. Shunk, Carlisle, and the late George R. Shunk. Mr. Briner is the son of Harry J. Briner, New Germantown, and the late Myrtle H. Briner. The Briners have three grandchildren, Steven and Stacey Price and Kelly Briner. [1841] Judicael is brother of Alain le Grand of Nantes and in 879 was "Chief of Half." Rennes is a town in western France and was the capital of Brittany; its Roman era name was Condate (hence Condat and Conde), a center of the Roman road network.
An unverified tree in Ancestry.com in 2018 offers: When Anna Mathilde (Annie) Updegrave was born on May 23, 1882, in Schuylkill, Pennsylvania, her father, Edward, was 27, and her mother, Amanda, was 27. She had three sons and one daughter with James E Geist between 1903 and 1925. She died on October 3, 1962, in Williams, Pennsylvania, at the age of 80, and was buried in Williamstown, Pennsylvania. Edward Updegrave was born in 1855. Amanda Bixler was born in 1855.
"West Schuylkill Herald [Tower City, PA], 5 October 1962," p. 6: "Mrs. Annie M. Geist, 80, widow of James E. Geist, died Wednesday evening at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Marlin Esterline 626 W. Market St., Williamstown. She had been ill for several years. Born in Schuylkill County, May 23, 1882, Mrs. Geist was a daughter of Edward and Amanda Bixler Updegrave. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Williamstown. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Lucy Esterline, Williamstown; one son, James T. Geist, Tower City; eight grandchildren, four greatgrandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Sunday afternoon from J. Franklin Lyons Funeral Home, with Rev. Kenneth Zimmerman, pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be made in the Methodist Cemetery, Williamstown."
