Charles and Gertrude adopted Howard M Shadle ( age 11 in the 1900 federal census). "The Standard [Lykens, Pennsylvania], 13 April 1923" p. 1: "Charles Hartman, aged 67 years, one of Tower City's best known and most highly respected citizens died suddenly Wednesday morning at 7:30 o'clock at his home, 117 Grand Ave., while seated at the table eating breakfast. Death being due to heart failure. At the time of his death he held the office of borough supervisor. Fraternally he was a member of the Knights of Golden Eagle. To survive is an only sister, Mrs. Mary Phillips, formerly of Williamstown, who has been making her home with him since the death of his wife several years ago. His funeral will take place Saturday morning, 10 o'clock with services at the house by the Rev. Chas. Slinghoff. Burial will be made in McAllister's cemetery in Clark's Valley."

D., and Mrs. Gregory Linnehan, the Philippines; two sons, George B. and John E., both at home; a sister, Mrs. Margaret Smith, Blain, and one grandson. Funeral services were held Sept. 1 at the David M. Myers Funeral Home on Walnut street, Newport. The Rev. Glenn Foulke, his pastor, officiated. Burial was in Restland Cemetery."
