[44694] See http://www.alfordassociation.org. The unverified file in 2018 at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Alford-1337 offers: "Rev Oliver Alford was born around 27 Oct 1767, either at Woburn or Lexington, Middlesex, Province of Massachusetts Bay. or at Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut Colony. Some sources place him in Addison, Republic of Vermont, although, according to the Alford History, his family did not go there until around 1772 or 1774. Connecticut has been used because the siblings who preceded and followed him (Rosetta & Chloe) were born there. Oliver died on 25 Dec 1845, in Albion, Erie, Pennsylvania, United States. He was the son of Col Benedict Alford (1716-abt 1790) and Rebecca Owen (1736-1831). Benedict and Rebecca had six children, but Benedict had another eight by his first wife Jerusha Ashley (abt 1723-1761), so there were at least 14 sibilings in the family. . . . Oliver was a Baptist Minister. According to the Alford History, around 1783 he attended a great revival meeting under the auspices of a distinguished clergyman of that time and was converted at the age of 16 and united with the Regular Baptist Church. He became a teacher and an able scholar and was ordained a Baptist Minister about the year 1790. Rev Oliver Alford was "endowed with a good memory and with powerful strength, activity and endurance, with pure Christian nobility and character. He entered the University with great spiritual zeal and energy." He apparently created new church organizations and associations throughout many states. Oliver was also one of the Vermont Patriots in the Second Revolutionary War as the War of 1812 was sometimes called, and served as a Minuteman. Again, according to the Alford History, he was unequaled as a fine marksman or sharp-shooter. He and a group of men, "with strength and might they pulled and pushed a raft out into the lake (Erie) in darkness of night and captured a British Frigate near Ferrisburgh on 19 May 1814." No war service documents were located for Oliver in the habitual on-line databases. Although there is a discrepancy of dates, the skirmish referred to in the Alford History may have been the skirmish at Otter Creek, Vermont (May 14, 1814), which according to Wikipedia was 'An American victory by a naval squadron, commanded by Master Commandant Thomas MacDononough, supported by a battery at Fort Cassin, over a British naval force sailing from Isle-aux-Noix, Lower Canada, attempting to attack the shipyard at Vergennes, Vermont'.. In his book, Historical Dictionary of the War of 1812, R Malcomson states that the slowness of the British approach (under Cmdr Daniel Pring) gave Cmdr Macdonough ample warning and apart from six galleys and four gunboats, the Fort Cassin battery was also prepared for action. The latter was manned by naval personnel (under Lieut Stephen Cassin), a party of the Regiment of Light Artillery and a large number of Vermont Militia. Oliver may have been among this last group's numbers. He was married twice, the first time, to Lovina Porter (abt 1769-abt 1834) on 08 Nov 1787 at Addison, Republic of Vermont. The marriage ended with her death on 07 Nov 1834, in Cambridge, Crawford, Pennsylvania, United States. He married a second time on 26 Jan 1835 to Sally "Unknown". This marriage has not been posted in WikiTree for lack of information. . . . Oliver entered a land grant in Addison County, Vermont, in the year 1793 and bought property, first settling in Vergennes, later, around 1805, in Ferrisburgh. He had Power of Attorney granted by the Courts, and while it is not known if he practiced at the Bar, in all probability he used the power invested in him to settle different estates for the Alfords. He and his family left Vermont and moved to Crawford County, Pennsylvania about 1824-1825. He was engaged there with church work. In 1830 they went west, as requested by their children who then lived in Michigan, settling on a homestead about three miles east of Coldwater, Branch, Michigan. Oliver also entered land at Door Prairie which could be an area described as part of the settlement of Door Village in Laporte County in Indiana, United States. They remained on their Homestead about three or four years and then returned to Crawford County, Pennsylvania, where his wife died. After her death, he devoted all his time to the ministry. He took part in the great debate with Rev Alexander Campbell and preached in many churches in Ohio, Michigan, Vermont, Pennsylvania, New York State and Virginia." The file also contains information such as his children.
