[3034] Prince (later king) Edward I transferred "the county of Ulster" about 1255 to Walter, Lord of Connaught. This was the second "creation" of this earldom, originally bestowed on Hugh de Lacey in 1205 but claimed by the crown on Hugh's death in 1226. Ulster is the northern part of Ireland, the name from the Gaelic Uladh and the Norse ending "ster". Walter married: (1) Maud, daughter of Hugh de Lacey, Earl of Ulster, and (2) Avelina FitzJohn (who died about 05-20-1274). His mother (and wife of his father) is from "Ancestral Roots..." (Balt., 1992) 177B-8. Cf. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walter_de_Burgh.

[23103] NEHGR, April, 2000, 223 states he was "of Heytesbury, Wiltshire and Hamatethy, Cornwall . . . son and heir of Sir Walter Hungerford, Knt...." See "Magna Carta Ancestry," Douglas Richardson (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 2005), p. 443.
[33992] Ancestry.com offers: "Leonard Name Meaning - English and French (Léonard): from a Germanic personal name composed of the elements leo 'lion' (a late addition to the vocabulary of Germanic name elements, taken from Latin) + hard 'hardy', 'brave', 'strong', which was taken to England by the Normans. A saint of this name, who is supposed to have lived in the 6th century, but about whom nothing is known except for a largely fictional life dating from half a millennium later, was popular throughout Europe in the early Middle Ages and was regarded as the patron of peasants and horses. Irish (Fermanagh): adopted as an English equivalent of Gaelic Mac Giolla Fhionáin or of Langan. Americanized form of Italian Leonardo or cognate forms in other European languages."
