H of the 4th Maine Infantry during the American Civil War. According to the Adjutant General Report, David enlisted on October 14, 1861, and mustered in on November 9, 1861. He was discharged for disability on December 31, 1862. In the 1850 census, David was living in Sedgewick, Maine, with his parents Alexander (52) and Susan (47). Also living in the Snowman household were Elizabeth (26), Thomas (24), Michael (22), both sailors, Susan (20), Alexander (17) (also listed as a sailor), Samuel (15), Addison (19), Sewall (12), Jacob (6), and Abby (2). In the 1880 census, David and his wife Lizzie are living in Woodland with children Addison (9), William (8), Eva (6), George (4), and Emmely (1). In 1900, his family consisted of his wife and children Arthur, Albert, Harry, Walter, and Eva. In 1930, he was 85 years old and living with his daughter Eva (36). While David was a member of the 4th Infantry of Maine, it fought with the Army of the Potomac under Major General George McClellan in the Peninsular Campaign during March through July of 1862. It fought in many battles including the Seven Days Battles in the Richmond area. As part of the Northern Virginia Campaign, it fought in the Second Battle of Bull Run and the Battle of Chantilly and in December 11-15, 1862, the 4th fought at the Battle of Fredericksburg, Virginia.
