The ancestry shown here requires documentation. It is from the unverified "The Moores of Mariaville, Maine" tree in Ancestry.com in 2015.
[Mary's death date is 2 March 1865 per Amherst, ME Town Clerk. The date accepted above is from Vivian Inez Kenniston.] Bradford was first called Blakesburgh Plantation. Note that in the 1850 census she is listed as b. in NH. A Joseph Ames was constable and assessor there in 1823, and James Kenniston was school agent for the south ward that year. Joseph Ames' children listed at Bradford are: Sopha (b. 27 Nov 1817), John Forbes Ames (b. 10 Mar 1820), James Keniston [sic] Ames (b. 2 Feb 1822) and Lidia Wilson Ames (b. 22 Dec 1823). Were there earlier children born elsewhere? Does Mary's ancestry eventually tie into the family of William Ames, born at Bruton, Somersetshire, England, baptised 6 Oct 1605, came to Braintree, Mass. in 1635? - see "Ames Ancestry - Europe to Maine," Agnes H. Ames (Brewer, ME, 1979). An Ames Society web site is www.AmesSociety.org.
Prof. David A. Drabold of Ohio University
"We seek the help of NEHGS to determine the wife and parentage of Joseph Ames of Blakesburgh/Bradford, Maine. Joseph is recorded in the 1820 and 1830 census in Bradford and his name is all over the town records of the time; he held several offices in the small community between 1820 and 1833.
"Potentially useful background:
"James Kenniston Ames (b. 2 Feb 1822, Bradford, Penobscot, Maine), was son of Joseph Ames and an unknown mother. From the Bradford town record (available from LDS), his siblings born in Bradford are: Sophronia (b. 27 Nov 1817), John Forbes Ames (b. 10 Mar 1820), Lydia Wilson Ames (b. 22 Dec 1823).
"Helpful facts:
"We know from a recent DNA test that these Ames are of the line of Robert Ames of Boxford. The DNA seems to also suggest (without complete certainty) that the lines of Daniel and John (sons of Robert of Boxford) are more likely ancestors than the other male siblings.
"Joseph's son James K. Ames appears in many records:
"http://search.ancestry.com - [Note that the record says 'Amberst' Maine, of course its actually Amherst, Hancock, ME.]
"The 1880 census for James K Ames says that Joseph was born NH, but sibling Sophronia Ames says Maine and (probable) sibling Lydia says Mass!!
Dr. Drabold wrote 13 Aug 2011:
"I have surrendered or perhaps declared victory on the Ames of Bradford. I paid NEHGS to look into it and I was really disappointed. They learned basically nothing that I did not already know and charged me for it.
"There are no birth records for Mary, Rev Moses or Joseph. However, I have concluded that Mary and Moses are surely children of Joseph Ames, probably full siblings of the Ames in Bradford born into early 1820s. There is an incredibly helpful bio on Moses Ames, a celebrated Freewill Baptist preacher of the day. This tells us that he is born in Sullivan, Hancock, ME in 1812, and there is a Joseph in Twp 8, by Sullivan in 1810. Bio says that Moses moved with his parents to Bradford in 1816, perfectly consistent with what we know. Moses appears in his own right in the Bradford census in 1840, is trackable until his death in Dover in 1860. I could go on, but I am content that Moses, Mary, James Kennniston Ames (my GG grandfather) etc are siblings.
" OK, so I came upon Groton, MA recds that explicitly state that Amos Ames of Groton (b 1758, s of Amos Ames and Abigail Bulkeley) 'went to Sullivan Maine'. This is a heck of a coincidence. This Amos had a brother Moses who so far as we know dsp, though he lived to be over 30. Amos (1758) himself is known to have had two daughters in Groton in 1784 and 1786 (mother was Polly [Bragdon], who is apparently incorrectly listed as marrying Amos in Sullivan ME in 1790). The geographical proximity of Joseph to Amos, the use of the unusual name Moses for his ?firstborn? son and some other oddities make me believe that Amos or perhaps one of his several brothers was father of our Joseph.

"Pioneers of Maine and New Hampshire, 1623-1660" reports that Stephen matriculated 17 Nov 1581 in St. John's College, Oxford and was awared the BA degree 3 Feb 1587 and served as vicar of Wherwell, Hants. 26 Jan 1588 to 1601; came to New England in the William and Francis 5 June 1632 at age 71 with wife Helen and others and settled in Lynn, MA where he "Entered at once upon church life; drawing down the suspicions and oppositions of some in power for such independency. Undertook a scheme for the founding of a plantation at Yarmouth . . . in 1638-39 joined in the settlement of Hampton, N.H. to which he is said to have given the name, and whose first minister he became." [53360] "The Ellsworth American [Ellsworth, Maine]," 29 March 2023: "Orland - It is with great sorrow and bittersweet gratitude that we announce the passing of our brave and devoted wife, mother, mimi, sister and friend on March 12, 2023. Marnie was born in Castine to Darrell and Ruth (Wardwell) Rollerson on May 16, 1949. She was the fourth of five children, where she grew up in Bucksport. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Richard, her daughters Molly and Mattie and her grandson, Cade. She is also survived by her older sister Judy White, who was also her closest friend. Marnie first met her husband Richard at the Toddy Pond Marina at the Friday Night Dance in 1966. They were later married in 1970 and by 1976 had purchased the farm on the Back Ridge Road in Orland. For the next 47 years, they, along with their daughters and grandson, dreamed, lived and cultivated the farm life. Most days, you would find Marnie simply doing what she loved: working in her beautiful flower beds, the vegetable garden, mowing the lawn and even the sides of the road, per the request of her cats! You might also catch her weed whacking the ditch or on the back of her beloved horse, Tia. You would often see her traveling the Back Ridge Road on foot with four or five dogs, pausing to stop and chat with her neighbors and often inviting their dogs to join the fun. She was a woman who possessed many talents. She was a homemaker, farmer, small business owner, master gardener, horse riding instructor, an animal lover and advocate, an avid runner and hiker, which included hiking the 100-mile wilderness and paddling the 92 miles of the Allagash Waterway. She loved her dogs, the ocean, her spot on Toddy Pond and was generous, uniquely independent and fiercely loyal to her family."
