[2502] For Ealdred, lord of Bamburgh (913 - ca 930) see Ann Williams, Alfred P. Smyth and D. P. Kirby. "A Biographical Dictionary of Dark Age Britain: England, Scotland and Wales, c. 500-c. 1050" (London: Seaby, 1991), pp. 116-117. http://www.stephen.j.murray.btinternet.co.uk/athelstan.htm offers: "In 913, the death of Eadwulf, reeve of Bamburgh, who king than English sources), the 'Annals of Ulster and the Three Fragments,' refer to him as 'king of the Saxons of the North.' . . . 'ruled in north-eastern Northumbria, is recorded by the Chronicle of Æthelweard'. The anonymous 'Historia de Sancto Cuthberto' (History of St.Cuthbert) relates that a Viking king called Ragnald arrived with many ships, and seized the lands of Eadwulf's son and successor, Ealdred. Ealdred sought the help of King Constantine II of Alba. Ealdred's and Constantine's forces met Ragnald's at Corbridge, on the Tyne (16 miles west of Newcastle). Constantine was put to flight, and his army scattered. Ealdred and Uhtred, his brother, were the only English nobles not killed. Following the battle (c.914 - there are no dates in the 'Historia'), the captured territory was divided between two of Ragnald's followers." http://www.welcome2britain.com/london-tourist-information/anglo-saxon-england-timeline4.htm offers: "914 - High-Reeve Ealdred I of Bamburgh persuades King Constantine II of Alba to invade Norse controlled Bernicia in an attempt to restore his position. The Vikings defeat the Scots at the First Battle of Corbridge. Other Vikings harry the Welsh Coast and move up the Severn. They capture Bishop Cyfeilliog of Ergyng, but are driven out by Mercian levies from Hereford and Gloucester." An historical novel, "The Last Kingdom," by Bernard Cornwell (New York: HarperCollins, 2005), provides a graphic description of the Danish incursions around Bamburgh in the ninth century.

Fishermen from England had been using these islands off Kittery, ME for decades; the islands had 600 families when evacuated during the War for Independence.
