[55759] "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 12 February 2024: "Lamoine - Evelyn H. Linscott left this world one month shy of her 91st birthday by her own terms on February 10, 2024, after a short illness at an Ellsworth hospital. Her oldest son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter were with her at the end. She was born to Louetta and Earl Hanscom of Sedgwick, ME, on March 9, 1933, at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital. She graduated in 1950 from George Stevens Academy as salutatorian of her class. She lived and worked in Ellsworth, at the Paul Tapley Insurance Agency, and met her future husband, Richard Linscott. They married in May 1956. They had two sons, Jeffrey and Mark. She was an avid vegetable gardener and had two huge gardens that she loved tending to. If you were lucky to get some of her jarred green beans or the massive potatoes and tomatoes, you were in Heaven. She loved to solve crossword puzzles, she always had a good book to read, and there was an ongoing jigsaw puzzle in progress in the back room. She would rather be outside than inside and until just a few years ago, she was mowing her own lawn and trimming the flowering bushes. When Dick was still alive, they would go to yard sales all over Hancock County on the weekends - she was the yard sale Queen. She was predeceased by her parents; her two brothers, Orrin Hanscom and Earl Hanscom Jr.; along with her older sister, Katherine Hanscom-Rainey, who only recently passed in 2019 at the age of 97. Her husband, Dick passed away in 2008, followed by her younger son, Mark in 2009. Evelyn leaves behind her older son, Jeffrey, daughter-in-law, Pam, and granddaughter, Kelsey with her husband, Stephen and great-grandson, Marcus; along with Mark's daughters, Lauren and great-grandson, Alex, and Nicole with fiance, Sam. She also has two very dear sisters-in-law; and several nieces and nephews who are very special to her heart."

Dorothy is daughter of Merton Nathaniel Johnson (1879-1917) & Helen Elizabeth Richardson (1889-1971; m. 30 April 1909 in Bangor, Penobscot Co., ME).
Mabel Rapp's "The Kenison Story" states John was born in 1615 - the date I show here - not 1607 as given elsewhere. Mrs. Byrd Miles (see under Humphrey Kynaston) states "There was [sic] four John Kinastons [sic] who were recorded in English Pedigree of this family living in Shropshire in 1623. They were unmarried at this time and the records do not indicate what became of them. It is possible one of them came to America, but not so recorded."
The WFT file gives son Robert Keniston who m. Elizabeth Grey and had Henry Keniston (b. 22 Jan 1575 in Manchester, England, d. in New Hampshire) who m. Elizabeth Leese (dau. of Thomas and Hannah). Robert is supposed to have been High Sheriff of Manchester. Henry and Elizabeth had John Keniston (b. 1 Jan 1614 in Manchester, England, d. 16 Apr 1677 in Greenland, NH) who m. Agnes Magoun Moody (dau. of John Moody) and had William Story Kenniston (b. 1646 in Portsmouth, NH, d. 1671, m. Nellie Vandt and had Job Smith Keniston [b. ca. 1710, d. 1802 - father of David Keniston, b. 7 Nov 1736 in Boothbay, ME, d. 24 Feb 1853 at age 117 in Chicago, IL, of Boston Tea Party fame]) and Christopher Kenniston (1655-1739; m. Mary Muchmore and had Alexander, George, William John, Sarah and James per unconfirmed Broderbund Family Archives). While there is no indication that the John Kenniston below is this son, I add Mrs. Miles information here to assist researchers. Note that the parents of the John, below, must be proved! John Kenniston first settled by 1645 in Portsmouth, was of Dover, NH in 1663 and was marked "gone" in the 1664 tax list. He settled in Greenland, NH by 1665, was sued by Capt Champernowne in 1666, served on the Grand Jury in 1667 and 1668, subscribed to support a Portsmouth clergyman in 1671, and on 16 April 1677 his house was burned and he was killed by Native Americans. His widow, who had sat in the stocks in 1676 for "railing" and was granted administration of his estate 1 August 1677, was known as Agnes Magoon in 1681 when she and her son Christopher conveyed land in Greenland to George Huntress. (See Genealogical Dictionary of ME & NH by Noyes, Libby and Davis {Portland, ME: 1936], Part III, p. 398; Court Records of NH, deeds, V:242.) Agnes m. between 1 August 1677 and 19 November 1681 Henry Magoon (a Scot, he d. after 25 August 1684 and before 1701). The children of John Kenniston and wife Agnes are given in this database.
http://www.weekslibrary.org/history.html offers: "In 1677, John Keniston's house on Packer Brook was burned by Maine Indians incited by the French and he was killed. On June 26, 1696, another band of raiding Indians killed 14 people at Portsmouth Plains, near the present National Little League field, and carried off several prisoners. The Portsmouth militia found them having breakfast the next day and rescued the captives. The site of the rescue soon came to be called 'Breakfast Hill', on the Greenland-Rye line. In 1717, John Keniston, grandson to the John Keniston who was killed by Indians in 1677, killed a Maine Indian on Little Bay. The following year, a jury refused to convict him."

John resided at South Penobscot, Maine, and was a well-known captain in the schooner fishing fleet. Castine VR gives his birth as 14 December 1838. He went to sea at age 11 on the schooner "Albert" - and at age 19 on the schooner "Sea Ranger" - and at age 21 on the schooner "Diana". John served during the War Between the States as Master's Mate (a Sea Officer) on the U.S.S. Flambeau, the U.S.S.Chatham and the U.S.S.Laburnum. After this war he served on schooners "Albatross", "Telegraph", and "Daniel Webster". The three-master "F. D. Hodgkins" was built for him. He also served 2 years on the "Mattie F." - 2 years on the "Edgar S. Foster" - 3 years on the "T. M. Nicholson" - 1 year on the "M. B. Stetson." He died in active service as captain of the "Hiram Lowell," a schooner of the T. M. Nicholson fleet of Bucksport, Maine. In all, John made 39 trips to the Grand Banks, failing to bring home a full load only twice; he never lost a man. {-see news story of his life and death in "Bangor Daily News", Bangor, Maine, 12 September 1907}
"The Bucksport Herald," Friday, 9 September 1898: "A RECORD BREAKER. Banker A.V.S. Woodruff arrives with 300 tons of Cod. With guns booming and colors flying from all three trucks, schooner Arthur V.S. Woodruff, the largest and best of Nicholson's spring Grand Banks fleet came up through the Narrows before a stiff breeze Thursday forenoon and Capt. Peterson laid her alongside Nicholson's dock as if she had been a cat-boat, while an admiring crowd applauded. The Woodruff fairly wallowed with her huge freight of fish. Every inch of space was crowded full and the skipper thinks he has close to 5500 quintal, some 400 or 500 quintal more than last year. The Woodruff has broken her own record and the world record as far as that goes, for the cargo which she brought is without doubt the largest ever brought from the Grand Banks into an American port. The schooner was manned by a fine crew and fitted out in the usual complete manner of the Bucksport fleet. She carried 26 men all told and the same number of dories. The ship's company was as follows: J. F. Peterson, master; Solon Peterson, mate; Wm. B. Perry, cook; and the following fishermen: Alfred Perkins, Wm. Conner, Ed S. Conner, ...J. H. Peterson.... The Woodruff sailed the 27th of June and left for home the 9th. She reports like the rest, good weather with not enough wind to make it interesting." The Woodruff is on the list of Merchant Vessels of the U.S., 1904, as No. 106541 with signal letters KFDH, rigged as a schooner, 193 gross tonage, 155 net tonage, 105.6 feet in length, 27.1 feet in breadth, 10.3 feet in depth, with a crew of five, built in 1888 in Essex, MA.
"Masters Index, Some Castine Vessels," typescript in the library of the Searsport (ME) Maritime Museum, records that in 1875 John F. Peterson was Master of the Schooner Perfect of Castine - a ship of 26 tons, built in South Scituate, MA in 1868 - owners: "Lucy J. Peterson 1/4, Dora A. Leach 1/8, Penobscot; Melnor W. Grindle 1/2, Samuel Dunbar 1/8, Castine." (The Woodruff was also captained by Joseph G. Dunbar, cousin of the Conners.)
A vivid description of fishing under sail on the Grand Banks is given in "Coastal Maine: A Maritime History," Roger F. Duncan (New York: W. W. Norton & Co., 1992), Chapter 26.
