He was born at Milbridge June 21, 1926, the son of Joseph S. and Pearl B. (Parker) Leighton. He served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army in Germany in World War II where he received the Purple Heart and Gold Star Medals. He was a past master of Pleiades Lodge No. 173 AF & AM of Milbridge and the John F. Kennedy Chapter No. 6 of the DAV. He worked for 26 years at Warren Funeral Home Milbridge. He was active in Milbridge town government, where he served as selectman, town clerk and as a school committee member. He also served on the board of directors of Evergreen Cemetery Association of Milbridge. In 1976 he was elected to be the Republican State Committeeman for Washington County. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Elaine R. Leighton; one son, Barry A. Leighton; and daughter-in-law, Jackie; two grandchildren, Nadine and Joshua, all of Milbridge; two sisters, Elaine Redimarker and her husband, Shareld of Addison, Sylvia Ouellette and her husband, Robert of Winterport; one brother, Frederick Leighton; one aunt, Bessie Sawyer, both of Steuben; several nieces, nephews and cousins."
