[54745] Elaine's obituary: "Milbridge - Mrs. Elaine R. Leighton, 74, wife of the late Donald H. Leighton, died Wednesday, May 14, 2003, with her son and daughter in law at her side following a long illness at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth, Maine. She was born September 15, 1928, in Milbridge, Maine, the daughter of Almena and Milford Ray Sr. Elaine was raised in Milbridge and spent her life living and working in the community. She worked packing sardines for 47 years. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who gave her endless love and energy to her family. She will be missed deeply by those close to her. Elaine created and will always be loved and adored for the deep and rock solid family core she nourished from the day she began her own family. Her Sunday dinners drew her family together every single week of her life. She believed completely in family and home, was an avid vegetable gardener and a master of jigsaw and crossword puzzles. She loved to cook for her family and her recipes are treasures to many. Many will remember her as she, with a small hoe and roller, would venture off near her home to dig clams for her fritters, or when she could be seen in her fields picking blueberries and cranberries by hand. Elaine is survived by her only child, Barry A. Leighton, a devoted and loving son, and his wife, Jacquie; her granddaughter, Nadine M. Leighton; her grandson, Joshua A. Leighton, and his wife, Holly; her sister and dearest friend, Helen Strout, and her husband, Frank; her brother, Milford (Roonie) Ray Jr., and his wife Helen; she was predeceased by her brother, Moses Ray. She will be missed by a dear family friend, Betty Mohs of Steuben."
