INDEX

[1808] Cerdic, an ealdorman, landed with his son Cynric in Hampshire in 495; defeated the Britons in 508 and decisively at Certicesford (Chartford) in 519. {Ref. Enclc. Brit., 1956 Ed., 5:157.} His ancestry, largely legendary, is traced back to Woden and Frea; Woden's legend has his ancestors back to Adam and Eve. {per "Royal Ancestors of Magna Charta Barons," Carr P. Collins, Jr., Dalas, 1959.} Cerdic and his son Cynric are supposed to have become kings in 519 in the southern part of Hampshire, after several successful battles against the Welsh. Cerdic's sister is supposed to be mother of Wihtgar, to whom Cerdic and Cynric gave the Isle of Wight. {Cf. "The Age of Arthur," John Morris (NY: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1973, pp. 103-13, 225).} See Trelawney Dayrell Reed, "The Rise of Wessex," chart p. 31, gens. 1-8.
