[13699] "The Jeffersonian-Democrat [Brookville, PA], 7 March 1907," p. 8: "12 January 1928," p. 1: "Alleged to have been a victim of blackmail, Abram Shaffer, a barber of Worthville, took his own life about midnight Tuesday of last week, by drinking some corrosive poison said to have been prepared by himself. He was 61 years old. Mr. Shaffer lived in the old Geist Hotel with his wife. He went to his room that evening about 11 o'clock. A half-hour later Calvin Geist, a brother-in-law of the deceased, heard groans coming from Shaffer's room. Investigating, he found Shaffer on the floor in terrible agony. A physician was called, but the man was beyond aid and died about 12 o'clock. It is alleged that demands made upon the deceased by a woman and her husband, residents of Worthville, caused Shaffer to end his life. The man, it is said, had demanded $3,000 from Shaffer, and of that amount he is alleged to have paid $800. The woman, it is claimed, further demanded support for herself and her three children, because her husband had left her. Mr. Shaffer was born in Worthville a son of Gsorge and Catherine Shaffer, pioneer residents of that section. He was married late in life to Miss Minnie Geist, of Worthville, and had lived his entire life there. He leaves four brothers: Calvin, Asa, John and Herbert Shaffer, and five sisters: Mrs. Cardie Richards, Mrs. David Mottorn, Mrs. Margaret Fike and Mrs. Calvin Martz, of Worthville, and Mrs. Maude Miksell, of Richardsville."
