"The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine], 22 Septembe 2021": "Edith "Edie" Mason passed away in Gorham, Maine, on Monday, September 20, 2021, at the age of 88, following a brief illness. Edith was born in Sedgwick, Maine, on August 8, 1933, the daughter of Edgar and Amy Cousins and older sister of Sidney.
She graduated from South Portland High School, class of 1951, and then went on to graduate from the first class of the Maine Medical Center School of Nursing in 1954. Her love for young people translated to her choice of work settings and she began her career in obstetrics and pediatrics at the Maine Medical Center. The latter years of her nursing career were spent working with college students at the University of Southern Maine Health services, Gorham campus, from which she retired in 1990. Edith married Richard Mason of Levant, Maine, on August 27, 1955, at Elm Street United Methodist Church in South Portland. They began their married life in South Portland before building a home on the Huston Road in Gorham in 1966, where they raised their family. Edith is survived by her loving husband, Richard, of 66 years. She is also survived by her brother, Sidney Cousins; her daughter, Meredith Koerner (William); daughter-in-law, Charlene Donahue; daughter, Lori McCarty (Tim); daughter, Wendy Carter (Tom); son, Richard Mason (Marie); daughter, Joellen Carroll (Bruce); her grandchildren, Amanda Koerner-Oakes (Ernie), Daniel Koerner (Heather), Brian Mason, Meghan Grassi (Vincent), Amy Holland (Doug), ENS Matthew McCarty, Isabel Stephens (Scott), Merejo Carter, Katrina Mason, Scott Mason, Tabor Carroll, and Kendra Carroll; and her great-grandchildren, Lucia, Augustine and Bosco Grassi, and Ronan Koerner. She was preceded in death by her son, Scott Mason; and grandson, David Mason. As a young student, Edith was active in school plays, newspaper, yearbook and dance. As an adult, she became a voracious reader and enjoyed sewing, crafts, canning produce from their gardens, and especially looking after her husband, children and grandchildren. Her life was devoted to caring for others and she and Richard ultimately became parents of six children, all of whom now embody the values of selfless devotion to family, and to the Christian values of love, acceptance, honesty and integrity. Edith had a talent for making everyone feel loved and welcomed, and she embraced this ideal by planning many family and church gatherings and events. She was known for her delicious home cooking and her ability to organize a feast for the masses. She passed on her love of service to her children, who continue her legacy of devotion to family, church, and community.

[20871] "Owen Name Meaning - Welsh: from the Welsh personal name Owain, probably a borrowing in Roman times of Latin Eugenius (see Eugene), but possibly of more ancient Celtic origin, cognate with Gaelic Eoghan. Scottish and Irish: reduced Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac Eoghain 'son of Eoghan' (see McEwen)." - Source: Dictionary of American Family Names ©2013, Oxford University Press.

[14469] http://www.masshist.org offers access to the papers of Samuel Whitcomb and reports: "Samuel Whitcomb was born in Hanover, Mass. on 14 Sept. 1792. He served in many careers throughout his life including bookseller, landowner, clerk, journalist, and education advocate. He began selling books in 1810 and served in this capacity until the 1820s. His bookselling career was interrupted only by service in the War of 1812. In 1817 Whitcomb married Mary Simmons Joy who traveled with Whitcomb as he sold subscriptions of Thomas Waits' publication, 'Publick Documents and State Papers'. While traveling throughout the Southern states and the Midwest (primarily Illinois), Whitcomb purchased land that he later rented through an agent for profit. Whitcomb originally settled in Cohassett and Dorchester, Mass. By 1825 he had obtained a position as a foreign entry clerk in the Boston Custom House. While working in Boston and living in Dorchester, Whitcomb became involved with various organizations such as the Dorchester Workingmen's Party, and served as its secretary from 1830-1832. As early as 1833 Whitcomb began pursuing work in Washington, D.C., and by 1837 became a revenue clerk in the U.S. Treasury. In 1845 while still living in Washington, D.C., Whitcomb worked as a correspondent for the 'Boston Journal'. He researched and wrote articles on politics and education, specifically advocating the high and graded school systems. His work for the 'Boston Journal' fostered his friendships with Edward Everett and Horace Mann. While in Washington, Whitcomb also worked for the Teachers Placement Agency, 1845-1849. As early as 1836 Whitcomb had purchased land in Springfield, Vt., but still spent most of his time in Washington. In 1850 he and Mary retired to their home in Vermont and there he pursued his personal interests in education, politics, religion, railroads, and canals; and assisted Vermont veterans of the War 1812 in obtaining bounty land from the government as payment for their service. Whitcomb died in Vermont on 5 March 1879." See also "History of the Town of Springfield, Vermont," Charles Horace Hubbard, Justus Dartt (Boston: George H. Walker & Co., 1893), pp. 498ff.
