[30739] A file in Ancestry.com offers: Josiah Everett III was born and grew up on a wilderness farm near New Portland, Maine. The new state was long the rugged upper part of Massachusetts and Josiah's opportunity for an education was meager. He married Lucy Churchill on Christmas Day, 1821, and lived happily with her until his death at 78 years of age. She survived him by 18 years, dying at the 'extreme age of 96 years'! With his son Seth, Josiah went to Tama county, Iowa, to the Dysar-Traer-Vinton area. He died and is buried in that county - Iowa's only Indian reservation. Five other children migrated to Burt County, Nebraska in the years 1866, 1867 and 1868.

It is most commonly a topographic name, for someone who lived either on stony ground or by a notable outcrop of rock or a stone boundary-marker or monument, but it is also found as a metonymic occupational name for someone who worked in stone, a mason or stonecutter. There are various places in southern and western England named with this word, for example in Buckinghamshire, Gloucestershire, Hampshire, Kent, Somerset, Staffordshire, and Worcestershire, and the surname may also be a habitational name from any of these."
