[2139] Robert was the 6th and last Earl of Derby of the Ferrers family. He was involved in the struggle against the crown, and was deprived of his title and lands, which the King gave to his second son (Prince Edmund "Crouchback"). The Dictionary of National Biography, on the Internet at http://www.lordbramhall.co.uk/dnb.htm, offers: "Robert Ferrers, [1240?-1279] His lands were seized and he was brought to trial and only avoided judicial condemnation by complete submission. But he does not seem to have been released from prison before the spring of 1266. He, now, however, put himself at the head of the disinherited whom the harsh treatment of the victors had driven into revolt, and gathered an army in his own district in Derbyshire. On 15th May he was with his troops at Chesterfield when he was surprised by Henry of Almayn and after a complete defeat was himself taken prisoner as be lay helpless with gout, from which he suffered like his father and grandfather. He was loaded with chains and confined a prisoner in Windsor Castle. In the Dictum de Kenilworth [29th November 1266] he was, with the sons of Montfort specially exempted from the general composition and was required to redeem his lands by the exceptionally heavy fine of 50,000 marks on one day for his interest in his estates. This however he failed to do, so that the great mass of the Derby estates passed permanently to the House of Lancaster, as the suits which Ferrers and his widow, after him, brought against Earl Edmund, failed to dislodge him from his possessions. Ferrers took no further part in public life, though about June 1269 he was released from his prison at Walingford by the forbearance of Edward and received restitution of part of his property. His violence and want of settled policy had ruined his career and he had long been equally distrusted by both sides. Though still occasionally spoken of as Earl, he had practically lost that position and his descendants were never able to win back the title now that the estates were gone to a more powerful house. He died before 20th November 1279, he directed his body to be buried at the priory of St. Thomas by Stafford, to the canons of which church he gave lands at Chartley and the avowed son at Stowe, near Chartley. By his second wife Eleanor, said to have been daughter of Ralph, Lord Bassett, he left a son, John, born in June 1271 at Cardiff, who succeeded to his grandmother Margarets share of the Winchester estates and, after joining Bohun and Bigod in the struggle for the charters, was summoned to parliament in 1299 and died in 1324. He was the ancestor of the Lord Ferrers of Chartley." See "Magna Carta Ancestry," Douglas Richardson (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 2005), p. 322. [20597] http://www.alnwickcastle.com states: "Henry, 9th Earl of Northumberland (1585-1632) was twenty-one years of age when he succeeded in 1585. He soon afterwards joined the army in the Netherlands and took part in the famous siege of Ostend. In 1588 he hired a ship and participated in the victory over the Spanish Armada. He used all his influence to support the claims of James I to the throne of England, and was treated with great favour by that monarch after his accession in 1603. Unfortunately, Northumberland had in 1594 appointed his cousin, Thomas Percy, to be Constable of Alnwick Castle. His Commissioner and Auditor, and his family resided in the Castle. This man, a bigoted Catholic, was neither a faithful servant to his master nor a loyal subject to the King. Many complaints as to his unjust, harsh and dishonest conduct were made to the Earl by the tenants. In spite of these complaints the Earl continued to trust him, with disastrous results to himself. In 1605 Thomas Percy was one of the principal conspirators in the Gunpowder Plot, on the discovery of which he fled, but was hunted down and shot at Holbeach in Staffordshire. Suspicion naturally fell upon the Earl who, although nothing could be proved against him, was confined in the Tower for seventeen years and only released on payment of a heavy fine. He was known as the "Wizard Earl" on account of his devotion to the study of chemistry and astronomy. He was a man of great ability and learning, a close friend of Raleigh and other learned men, but his pride and ungovernable temper made him many enemies. He died in 1632 and was succeeded by his son Algernon. The Earls of Northumberland had ceased to reside in Northumberland and the influence of the family in the north waned until its revival in the eighteenth century."
