[52742] "Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 24 February 2023: "Penobscot - Royce Woods Perkins, 86, passed away on January 11, 2023, while vacationing in Puerto Rico. He was born in Bucksport, May 15, 1936, a son of Vernon Perkins and Alice Woods Perkins. Royce had an adventurous spirit which led him to a wide variety of experiences and occupations in life. In Alaska he worked as a teacher, state wildlife biologist, Prudhoe Bay heavy equipment mechanic and Bristol Bay commercial salmon fisherman. In Maine he fished commercially, operated a heavy equipment construction company, served in the Maine Legislature (1994-2002) and as Hancock County Commissioner (2002-2004), and produced the Perkinstock bluegrass festival. Royce was a proud Navy veteran (1954-1958), an exuberant student of history and political affairs, an independent thinker and a voracious reader. He thrived on hunting, fishing, playing music and taking care of his 'paradise,' as he called his home and woodlot, as well as engaging with his family as often as possible. Though he had always enjoyed all-season outdoor activities in Maine and Alaska, he became a 'sun bird' in his later years, wintering in South Florida, and most recently, in Rincon, PR, where he continued to enjoy what life had to offer: fishing, exploring, swimming, playing music and discussing politics with whomever he could engage in conversation. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, LouAnna Crain Perkins; five children, Jennifer Perkins of Tallahassee, FL, Andy Cline of Kings Beach, CA, WendiLou Salman and her husband, Tristan, of Penobscot, Reuben Perkins of Deer Isle, and Jonathan Perkins and his fiancée, Erin Zobitz, of Portland; two grandchildren, Virginia 'Bella' Salman and Nelson Salman; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition, he leaves many dear friends, colleagues and debating buddies."
