[22483] Ancestral File reports she is daughter of Thoms Lumley of Lumley Castle, Durham. Cf. http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/LUMLEY.htm. (Lumley Castle takes its name from the man who was behind its creation, Sir Ralph Lumley. Sir Ralph was well-known, a popular soldier, celebrated for his bravery in battle. He played a crucial role in the defence of Berwick-on-Tweed in 1388 and the same year led the attack at the Battle of Otterburn. Sir Ralph obtained licences from Bishop Skirlaw in 1389 and from Richard III in 1392 to crenellate and rebuild his castle at Lumley. http://www.lumleycastle.com which reports "He was involved in the conspiracy to overthrow Henry IV and replace him with Richard II, a coup that failed and led to Sir Ralph and his son Thomas being arrested. The pair were both stripped of their titles and held prisoner until they were both executed in 1400. The wealth and land belonging to the Lumley family was given to the Earl of Somerset who owned the Castle so beloved by Sir Ralph until his death in 1421. The Earl had no son to bequeth his inheritance to, so under Elizabethan law Lumley Castle and all its land was restored to its rightful owners - in this case Thomas, Sir Ralph's grandson. Thomas Lumley continued the family tradition and was known as a brave and dashing soldier, a man of whom his grandfather would have been proud. He played a prominent role in the War of the Roses and was duly appointed constable of Scarbrough Castle for life. Thomas' bravery did not go unrewarded and he was summoned by writ to Parliament in 1461 where his family peerage was restored.")

He was with the Emperor Alfonso at the victory over the Almohades at Almería in 1147. 'In the beginning of August the famous French ambassadors came by sea. Their arrival embittered many. Having duly greeted the Emperor, they, the glory of their kingdom, spoke in the following manner: "Oh what a great honor it is for the noble French youth to greet you in a clear voice with all their sails unfurled. . . . William, the leader of Montpellier, powerful in his own right, follows these in a large and mighty vessel. They are perfectly armed and are prepared for a fierce war. They have remembered the alliance, for they now have arrived at the port. They also bring large stones for the destruction of the walls. These men lead a thousand ships, and they claim that already they may be too late. They are loaded with embellished arms and sweet foods. Once the battle begins, they will fight for the booty of gold. Surely they will kill our enemies without fail. Under their prudent leader, these spirited troops do not need the aid of anyone, if only they are aided by your forces. "' He was became a Cisterian monk before 1162 in Granselve."

[52988] "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 3 May 1921, p. 2: "Columbia Falls - Announcement of the death of Mr. Nathaniel White a former long-time resident of Columbia Falls, recently at the age of 88 years, at his home in Haverhill, Mass., was received with sorrow by his relative and friends in Columbia Falla and vicinity. He leaves one son, Milton White of Haverhill, Hannah Tibbets White, his wife, died aome years ago, and a little daughter died during the first years of their married life. The late Augustus White of Columbia Falls, whose widow resides with her daughter, Mrs. Lillian White in Portland was his brother and Dr. E. A. White of this town is a nephew. He was a member of the large pioneer White family of Columbia. Mr. White wae well known as an honest business man and kind and thoughtful friend and neighbor. He was an earnest Christian worker in the Methodist church and elsewhere. He greatly enjoyed attending the camp meetings and with his fine span of horaes and three-seated carriage many others were privileged to attend. He was not a timid Christian but let his light shine and his influence remains and will extend to future generations. One of his brothers, the late Rev. Theodore F. White, a distinguished Baptist minister, was pastor of many Maine churches. Among the number were Addison, Bath, Bar Harbor and Ellsworth."
