Born by about 1613, based on grants of land at Cambridge (and as early as 1608 if he was sixty years old when relieved of watching and warding and training). Came to Massachusetts Bay in 1632 on the "Lyon," & first settled in Cambridge. Moved to Hartford CT, then Northampton MA in 1655, & Podunk CT in 1660. Died in Hartford by 6 June 1676 (said to have been killed by the Indians). Married by about 1644 Mary _____; she outlived her husband and married (2) Thomas Catlin. William W. Johnson claimed in 1899 that Edward Elmer was from Braintree, Essex, England, as did Theo. J. Elmore in 1880. This is certainly possible given his presence on the Lyon in 1632, but there is no direct evidence for this proposed origin. Banks suggested that Elmer was from St. Mary Bow, London, citing only "Banks Mss."
Find A Grave contributor Ronald G. Gadzalinski adds:
Married three times. Edward Elmer was husband #2. First husband, married in 1631, was John Marshal.
FINDaGRAVE contributor Christy replies:
Mary, the wife of Edward Elmer and Thomas Catlin, was first married to John Marshall. Many researchers have merged Edward Elmer's wife with Mary Partridge, daughter of Rev. Ralph Partridge and Patience Bathurst and wife of John Marshall of Lenham, Kent, England. Some have also identified her as the first wife of Thomas Catlin, while others have her as his second wife. The error is copied and re-posted frequently in online family trees and in the Family Tree at familysearch.org. I have not seen a source, other than "gedcom" or posted trees, for deciding to link these women into one. I have, however, found evidence to the contrary. Elmer's first and Catlin's first or second wives "Mary" may have been named "Mary Partridge" or "Mary Marshall," but they could not have been the same as the daughter of Rev. Ralph Partridge of Duxbury, Massachusetts, nor wife of John Marshall of Lenham, Kent, England. Ralph Partridge's daughter Mary married John Marshall in England in 1631 and had sons Robert and John Marshall there. [Sutton-by-Dover, Kent, England, records] There is a 1631 transaction between Sybill Marshall and her son John on the one part and Ralph Partridge/Partrich and his brother Gervace Partridge/Partrich on the second part, on the occasion of John Marshall's marriage with Ralph Partrich's daughter Mary. [Son Robert Marshall had the document copied into Boston, Massachusetts, records in 1660 before sending it to England, possibly to settle a family estate.] Gervace Partridge identified his brother Ralph, Ralph's daughter Mary and her husband John Marshall in his will in 1647. The couple and their two sons Robert and John Marshall were also named in the 1655 will of Mary's father Ralph Partridge. None of those documents mention Edward Elmer nor Thomas Catlin. Had Ralph's daughter been married to Edward Elmer or to Thomas Catlin as first wife when the wills were written, she would not have been identified as wife of John Marshall, and her sons by either would probably have been named in Ralph Partridge's will. So far I have not seen any evidence that John and Mary (Partridge) Marshall came to New England, although that is certainly possible. Mary's father, her sons Robert and John Marshall, and Mary's sister Elizabeth were all residents of New England. John Marshall's will was probated in England in 1657 by his wife Mary, but I have not yet viewed those records myself.
