He stood 5' 11" tall and had dark hair and brown eyes. A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Perry County August 5, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 11 as a private with Co. G, 133rd Pennsylvania Infantry. He was seriously injured at the battle of Fredericksburg when a horse trampled him. Initially hospitalized at Washington DC, he then transferred to the medical facility at Portsmouth Grove, Rhode Island, from where he discharged the service by surgeon's certificate May 12, 1863. He also enlisted in Harrisburg March 9, 1865, mustered there March 10 as a private with the second organization of Co. F, 104th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 25, 1865. He married Margaret A. Simonton November 23, 1866, and fathered Elizabeth (b. 09/14/69), John E. (b. @1871), Thomas M. (b. 06/05/72, d. 08/19/73), William Harry (b. 07/30/74), Anna Clara (b. 06/22/76), Elsie F. (b. 04/23/78 - married Jacob Frazer Reisinger), and Charles Owen (b. 03/31/80)." Jacob served in Co. F, 104th Reg. as a Private from 10 March 1865 to 25 August 1865.
