Welsh: habitational name from Conwy formerly Conway, a fortified town on the coast of North Wales, itself named for the river on which it stands. "The News [Newport, PA], 17 May 1889," p. 3: "Ickesburg, May 13 - On last Friday a. m. Henry Kell, Sr., to whom reference was frequently made by your correspondent as being only a question of time in his case, died, aged sixty-seven years and six months. His body was interred in the Buffalo graveyard on Sunday following. There was an unusually large gathering of friends and neighbors to pay their last tribute of respect to this neighbor and friend. Sometime in the month of November, 1887, he complained of severe pain in the left great toe, but nothing of a serious character was apprehended. Home remedies were freely applied, but seemed to afford no relief. Dr. C. A. Rinehart was called in and, after a careful examination of the affected toe, pronounced it gangrene. Drs. L. Ellerman andl W. R. Cisna were also called professionally and agreed with Dr. Rinehart as to the character of the sore. Amputation of the foot was proposed by the doctor, but Mr. Kell would not permit it. During last winter his right foot became afflicted and with the approach of warm weather he began to fail rapidly. He leaves a widow and one son surviving him."
