[48366] "The Perry County Democrat [Bloomfield, PA], 18 March 1925," p. 3: "Taken from a copy of the weekly Service Letter of the Department of Forestry: Death claimed a kind friend and helpful co-worker in Harold Emery Bryner. He died in the Harrisburg Hospital at 3 a. m. Monday, March 2, 1925, following an operation for appendicitis on February 24. Mr. Bryner was born at Cisna Run, Perry county, May 16, 1883. In his early life he attended the public schools at Blain and later the Bloomfield Academy, Shippensburg Normal School and Ursinus College. After teaching in the public schools of Perry and Lebanon counties for several years he entered the Pennsylvania State Forest School at Mont Alto, and graduated in the class of 1908. Upon graduating from the State Forest School he was appointed Forester of the Pennypacker State Forest Sept. 1, 1908, with headquarters at New Germantown, Perry county. He held this position with credit until Feb. 15, 1922, when he was appointed assistant to the chief of the Bureau of Operations, Department of Forests and Waters, with headquarters at Harrisburg. Harold E. Bryner was an out-door man. He was devoted to the woods. He knew the trees, the forests, the streams and the mountains; he knew what they meant to the people of Pennsylvania. He was never in the woods without using his eyes. What he looked at he saw, and what he saw he thought about. He was a 'big boy' with his four sons whom he frequently took to the woods and told them of the forest and forest life. He was loved by his classmates and held in high regard by the people whom he served. He was the son of a sawmill operator and through a practical apprenticeship become well qualified to take up his studies at State Forest School. He was reared in the school of self-reliance and his mature judgment qualified him as a leader of his classmates, for he was chosen president of his class in his senior year at the State Forest School. He was a forester at heart and this particularly qualified him for so distinctive a professional career. He thoroughly believed in the great forest doctrine of the late Dr. Rothrock that 'the Forester's place is in the forest.' He lived for the forest and devoted his whole self to the promotion of this worthy cause. Long will his teachers, classmates, co-workers and friends remember his sterling qualities and sincere devotion to the woods. Mr. Bryner is survived by a widow and four sons: Albert, 13; Harold, Jr., 11; Richard and Robert, 8. He was a member of Adams Lodge, No. 319, F. and A. M., New Bloomfield; Society of American Foresters and the Pennsylvania Forestry Association."
